Fugaku : Z-plane, G10 or G12

I understand your enthusiam gentlemen, but please
stick to the topic title..
Thanks in advance.

Sorry about it. I will take care. :-X

Am I reading these drawings correctly? The third and fourth Kantai drawings apear to show a turboprop powered double hulled flying boat bomber and a jet flying boat patrol bomber?
Are these real designs or speculative? What year are they? The central wing section of the catamaran flying boat would be subject to extreme stresses on water in anything other than flat calm.

In the Kantai 132 image (the catamaran flying boat) is that a radar dish just forward of the cockpit?

Obviously these (otherwise very interesting) designs were made a lot more recently.
In the absence of any reference or source for them, I think caution is necessary.

Yes. That's right. Only I think that HA54 image is interesting.

Hi T-50 san. Nice to meet you again.
Unfortunately it's impossible to find this drama on you tube or DVD. It's TBS(Tokyo broadcasting system)'s drama which broadcasted only once.
I asked to TBS about this drama, but no answer.
http://www.tbs.co.jp/eng/
The explanation of this model and this drama are as follows.
The drama which described Fugaku and Chikuhei Nakajima was broadcast in 1980 as one of the Wednesday special drama series of TBS. The name of this drama was “さらば空中戦艦富嶽 ; Farewell! Aerial battleship Fugaku”. In the drama, Hajime Hana played the hero Chikuhei Nakajima, Asao Uchida played the prime minister Hideki Tojo. A chairman of the drama was Haruo Mizuno. Bombing to the United States by Fugaku was described by special photographing using this Fugaku model. This model has been keeping in the Chofu studio of Daiei motion picture company. Several years ago, this studio was destroyed and became car parking area. At the time, this model was planned to destroy, but some one rescued and moved to PEPPER LAND.Unfortunately this drama did not broadcast again. We hope to see this drama very much.

Blackkite,

Do you have an idea on which information the construction
of this model was based..?

Thanks in advance.

My dear lark!
I think this model is looks like Fugaku picture in Fuji Heavy Industries calender in 1980.
I believe this model was based on rather old knowledge, especially nose shape.

You confirm what I was thinking Blackkite...
I think that this is one of the most realistic configurations
of the legendary Fugaku concept.

Hummmm...... :-[
There is a opinion that ①”one of the fugaku designer said that Fugaku had a slanting cocoon type pressurized cabin located front end of the aircraft, Fugaku's nose had no step. At the beginning of the Fugaku project, there was a plan to had a stepped nose, BTW the person in charge rejected this plan saying “It's bad. It's like a Japanese spaniel sneezing". ②”He also said that the bombardier's seat was located out of the pressurized cabin ". ???

Hi guys

Has anyone got both the Anigrand and Fujimi Fugaku kits?

Would love to see both models built side by side.

Cheers

Andrew

Hi! I ordered Fujimi mokei's Fugaku, but I don't receive yet.
ANiGRAND's Fugaku model is based on the drawing from ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAPANESE AIRCRAFT 1900-1945, VOL.5 NAKAJIMA AIRCRAFT.
We already know that it's wing area is too large, the engine size is to small and the engine pitch is too large.
While Fujimi Mokei's model is based on Fujimi's own reserch result for Fugaku with HA-54 engine.

Blackkite, your contribution to this interesting topic is astounding. Thank you, sir.

Many thanks foiling san!
I think Futabasha's Fugaku model made a mistake same as the Fujimi mokei's one and the ANiGRAND's one. It was not necessary to accomodate all main landing gear tires. Main landing gear inner tire was dropped after take off. The design concept which accomodate all main landing gear tires was draggy and heavy for Fugaku. Fugaku must be aerodynamically clean same as B-29.

Hi Blackkite,

Am I to understand that after a mission with Fugaku's lighter weight (little fuel left and no bombs) that the single main landing gear tire could handle the now reduced wight of the aircraft?

Hi windswords san! That's right. ;)

Does anybody tried to draw or build the naval ship attack variant? With LOTS of MG's?

Hi! Enjoy.
海軍機設計部案 means the IJN aircraft design department plan.
海軍 means the IJN, 設計部 means design department, 案 means plan.

Fabulous cut-away, Blackkite. Thank you. Would love to see a general arrangement of similar calibre.

Hi! I can't find any general arrangement of this Z-plane designed by the IJN aircraft design department of Nakajima aircraft Koizumi factory.
Attached drawing was general arrangement of Z-plane designed by Nakajima aircraft Z-plane design special team.
The middle one is of course a after war work. I think main landing gear are little strange to accommodate and dihedral is little small.

Nice one of the Torpedo Carrying variant but I thought about this version:
From the book: Japanese Secret Projects: Experimental Aircrafts of the IJA and IJN 1939-1945 by Edwin M. Dyer, III

"Bombing was not the only mission that was envisioned for the Fugaku and during the Project Z brainstorming three other concepts arose and later formed part of Chikuhei's thesis. The First was and attack design that had 400 Type 97 7.7mm machine guns crammed into the aircraft. The front and the back of the bomber would accommodate 40 machine guns arranged in ten rows. The intention was to rain thousands of rounds of bullets down on to enemy ships with the theory that a swath of destruction 45m (148ft) wide and 10km (6.2 miles) long could be achieved by 15 Fugaku aircraft. Once the decks of these ships were swept of personnel, nine Fugaku bombers, each with twenty 907kg (2,000 lb) bombs or torpedoes, would deliver the coup de grace, covering a path 200m (656ft) in length with high explosive."

Honestly, I cannot think of suitable targets for this escort. For the turreted guns it's ok, but many guns seem to
be fixed, at least in direction, if not in azimuth, so aiming with such a large aircraft would have been difficult, I think.
And those mountings on tghe wings probably would have impaired aerodynamic efficency.

Hi! Jemiba san. You are absolutely right. I think this drawing is fictional, too.

OK...then why post it? If you thought it was a phony picture, why not say so?

Hi! I realize it by Jemiba's post. Thnaks Jemiba. :)
Please post another interesting topic. ;)

In "Arawasi " issue 4 -2006- is an article by Mike Goodwin
with title " Winged centipedes-The Mukade projects"
One of these was a version of the Fugaku armed with ninety-six 20mm guns
(12 rows of eight) in the fuselage underside, to counter the B-29 attacking the Japanese homeland.

This kind of bomber destroyer should have been discribed in Mr.Nakajima's 98 page prospectus
Hissho Sensaku-Sure to Win.

I see but what I read is a naval support version as the quote described it.

Hi! I am checking original Chikuhei Nakajima's "Winning game plan, Hissho Sensaku(必勝戦策)".
I will inform you some results. Please wait for a moment.
