According to fighter_bomber (a reliable source in the RuAF) there are unofficial claims that the A-100 was canceled. He stated the manufacturer specs don’t match the aircraft’s performance and that missiles can outrange radars and that in modern warfare such large aircraft are an easy target.

Very surprising especially since there are already two airframes built and at least one already has a functional radar. If nothing else they are far superior to old A-50s being they have AESA and the most modern hardware and software. This is a terrible idea since Russia only has 6 AWACs, for perspective Pakistan is 1/20 the land mass of Russia and doesn’t have as many enemies or the Arctic to patrol yet Pakistan has 9 AWACS, while China has at least 40.

Russia probably needs at least 20 to 40 awacs to effectively have all round coverage and sustain situational awareness in spite of wartime losses. Seems like a boneheaded decision by Russia if true, some awacs is better than none and they still provide data links to other aircraft and missiles, something difficult to do with no awacs. I can’t say the Russian Air Force has a history of brilliant decision making.

The only other solution that can take the job of a traditional awacs might be heavy drones such as Okhotnik that would be converted into an awacs.

So maybe more numerous, smaller and cheaper airframes are preferred, but it's something to be seen. I've seen the post in question though, although I cared more about Su-35s and MiG-31s taking over the A-50s position while simultaneously conducting combat operations.

I personally doubt that drones will take on the AEW&C role anytime soon though.

Yes but ground radars have limitations and are the first targets to be destroyed by a serious adversary. If A-100 project was cancelled at least the RuAF should commission the two A-100s they have otherwise what a giant waste of money and resources on probably the most advanced radar system in Russia at a time when Russia has an embarrassingly small fleet of awacs.

Something like an awacs is absolutely necessary especially when fighting far from home where you don’t have ground radars. I was always a big proponent of smaller awacs as more can be purchased and they can takeoff and land from smaller runways. Russia has a lot of options for a medium/light awacs such as IL-276, or even an MC-21 or even an IL-114-300 and such aircraft would still house a very large radar and they are all modern airframes.
