The design bureau developed two variants of the aircraft with AL-31F engines. The first (designated "518-44") was a tailless design with a single vertical stabilizer and a trapezoidal wing with a prominent root extension. The second (designated "518-55") had a conventional aerodynamic configuration with a trapezoidal wing with an ogive leading edge and a root extension, two vertical stabilizers, and missile armament located in the internal fuselage compartment. Both variants were also considered with two advanced R-59 engines designed by S.K. Tumansky. The final choice of engine was primarily influenced by the time factor. The AL-31F and R-59 engines were not expected to be developed until 1976, and, furthermore, according to TsAGI's conclusions, the Project 518-44's aircraft control system could prove difficult to implement, requiring a lengthy development cycle.

My dear Paul,

all of these 518 series were begun to develop from 1970 to 1972,
by the company,and I spoke about older project ,no name was
known to it,but just Ye.155,with no more details than, tailles shape
and ogival wing,also one possible Info,it was from about 1969.

Unfortunately I am not record the source,but of course may a Russian
book or magazine ?.

In 1968, work reached a qualitatively new level. In May, the government set the task of developing the S-155M all-altitude air defense system
with the E-155MP fighter-interceptor and the Zaslon guided weapons system with K-33 missiles. It was required to submit it for joint state testing in the fourth quarter of 1971.
The task called for the E-155MP to have high performance characteristics. With a normal flight weight of 38-40 tons, the interceptor was to reach a maximum speed of
3,000-3,200 km/h at high altitude and 1,500 km/h at ground level. The service ceiling was set at 23,000–25,000 m, the takeoff run was 500–800 m, and the landing roll was 500–600 m. The interception range was 700 km. The maximum target engagement altitude was to be 30,000–32,000 m.
In addition to the interceptor, the government also set the task of developing the E-155MF frontline missile-carrying bomber, equipped with the Rys' targeting and navigation system and Kh-30 guided missiles. Furthermore, the E-155MR aircraft was required for reconnaissance from low and high altitudes, with onboard equipment for processing intelligence information and transmitting it via radio channels to ground stations. The E-155MF project received the designation "518-11" at the design bureau, and the E-155MR received the designation "518-31."
