Mikoyan Product 701

Crew: 2
Wingspan: 19 m
Length: 31 m
Height: 7 m
Wing Area: 130 m2
Empty Weight: 35,000 kg
Maximum TO Weight: 65,000 kg
Cruise Speed: 2,500 km/h

Subsonic Range: 11,000 km
Supersonic Range: 7,000 km
Engines: Two turbofans of 200 kN each
Armament: 4 x R-72

The Product 701 was a long-range and high-altitude interceptor to replace MiG-31. It was designed for a high degree of autonomy to patrol the extreme borders of the USSR and intercept enemy bombers before they could launch their cruise missiles. Cranked delta wing, single vertical tail, and two turbofans above the wings with a dorsal intake. Internal weapons bay. Production line was planned at Gorkiy. A supersonic business jet version was proposed in 1993 as the Product 701P.

Attached are a three-view from the Aviatsia i Vremya magazine, and an excellent drawing by paralay.

Until now the drawings I have from 701 were that form your post but please take a look at this link and tell me what you think:

Alex Panchenko sells beautiful Soviet/Russian model aircraft, most of it very rare unbuilt projects but everything is authentic....but it is difficult for me to believe this is the true 701 shape. It seems a toy :-\

One seater, 4 "mini-engines", single underbelly missile....where are the Novator K-172 AAM?

Nope.

Thats one of the early Sukhoi T-4 configurations if I'm not mistaken. Look at the "Winged Archer" symbol on the fuselage.

Pometablava: it seems to me more like one of Tupolev 135 designs than as MiG 70.1

And one hideous early design from Tony Buttler´s book Soviet Fighters.

Matej - I presume the last model is 'fan art' and not official?

It was made for Tony Buttler's Secret Projects book, so its not an official model.

Is the dorsal air intakes behind the cockpit a good idea? Disturbed airflow in the air intake is not very good, no?

According to Evan, Northrop had sorted out a good design for dorsal inlets even for high alpha. Saab also did such a design (2107) for the Gripen which came a good second.

The Russians have traditionally been preoccupied with FOD, and a dorsal intake is the ultimate solution to that concern.

High AoA performance would seem to be meaningless when you're talking about a 65 tonne aircraft!

And this design looks to have several of the same features that made Northrop's design so successful.

Well this sound quite logical ::) ::)

For sure, this design was not intended for close combat. But from the specs listed above, the wing loading would have been just over 100 pounds per square foot ... not bad at all.

Did this design have a canard or not?

The most authentic sketch of the 7.01 is

index.php

The configuration derives from a tailless delta configuration once studied for the MiG-31 program, which appears to remains secret to date (due to its resemblance to the MFI and MDP programs).

Interestingly, this wing design has some similarities to the Rockwell HIMAT derived wing proposed for, for example, SAAB's 2107 design. This was thought to better at transonic speeds but inferior to the pure delta wing for supersonic manouvreing.

Just a thought : would the MiG 7.01 have been armed with ultra long range missiles such as R-37 or KS-172? After all it was a ultra-long range fighters so it seems quite logical that it have long range missiles no?

Certainly it would have used long range missiles. It was the replacement for the MiG-31 after all. Probably, it would have used R-37 missiles.

Ok thanks! I just tried to imagine 1st May 2015 over Moscow
- Tu 160s with Su-47 or MiG 1.44 in formation
- T-60S with MiG 7.01...
Impressive thought... but well this is what-if!!!

Dear all,

is there anyone who can id this design for me?. . I heard its called mikoyan project 7.01(which i am not sure). . . Any other additional information about it also will be highly appreciated. :)

Topics merged. The project you posted is discussed in the previous posts, so check them out! ;)

701 / MDP was an Oleg Samolovitch design based on his fixed-wing T-60S design, brought over when he left Sukhoi in 1985.

Thanks a lot people for the Help... Highly appreciated :)

Did the Mikoyan Product 7.01 incorporate stealth features and/or any fifth-generation fighter aspects? Share any technology with the Mikoyan Project 1.44?

Hi!
Type 7.01 long range supersonic interceptor. No front wing. Official drawing(bottom one) is reliable. ;)
Drawing.

And 701P supersonic business jet.

Paralay-san's amazing site.

These are fascinated wonderful and beautiful pictures as usual.
Thansk a lot my dear Jozef-san. :D

Indeed, though it would have also eventually replaced the MiG-31 Foxhound in service as well (with this in mind, Project 701 was way more agile than the Tu-128, though the Fiddler's manoeuvrability wasn't actually too bad to be fair). In fact, some Fiddler squadrons had already converted to the Foxhound as an interim measure prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union (the original planned retirement date for the Tu-128 was in 1990).

Amazing to read that the Tu-128 was to have been flown until 1990, which I find rather shocking because the Tu-128 was designed back in the 1950s.
