Recently.not so much has been published about these designs so I thought I would start this thread.
Many projects have there own threads and are well known to readers such as the CVA01 aircraft carrier.
But if you find something while researching an article or just for interest, please post it here.

Define never-were RN warship designs.
Only designs which were intended to the Royal Navy specifically?
Or designed in the UK for the commonwealth?
Or including the huge number of export designs for foreign navies?

I had in mind the numerous studies and designs done for the RN but I see no harm in including the categories you mention.
Material seems to have dried up recently.

The prime ones missing seem to be the Sea Dart iteration of the 60s Escort Cruiser, the mid-70s Commando Carrier, and the mid-70s GIUK Gap sub chasers which were mentioned by Friedman (IIRC). Whether solid information will ever turn up on them is anyone’s guess…

Friedman have a bit more info in his British WW2 cruisers book, I will have to check for the textd but in the mean time:
Southampton and Gloucester armament would be replaced by 2 twin 6"/50 QF Mark N5 gun turrets, light AA was not stated but likely the same twin ones used on Vanguard, heavy 4" AA not sure if remained or not.

Belfast would be the same but with 3 instead of 2 twin 6"/50 QF Mark N5 gun turrets.

Fiji and Ceylon group, as well as Swiftsure too would had been re-armed by 2 twin 6"/50 QF Mark N5 gun turrets but the other gun armament was to be 3 twin 3"/70 QF Mark N1 gun turrets.

The Tiger Scheme I modernisation was the one that was actually adapted, Scheme II was to inculde a uniform 3"/70 QF Mark N1 gun turrets, 6 in number, as well as 2x2 and 6x1 40mm Bofors

Basically the idea was to replace the triple 6" turrets of these standard cruisers with the twin ones used on Tiger 1:1 but due to the stability and topweight issues these cruisers by the end of WW2, one less turrets were to be installed instead.

Note that the triple 6" XXIII turrets weighted 185tons (metric), while the twin 6" N5 weighted 158,5tons (metric)

Sorry if I missed it in that huge list, but there was also a proposal for a 1943 modification to HMS Warspite to repair her damage, doubling her 4-inch guns to 8 x twins, improve her AA control and upgrade her light AA. This was prepared by a DNC constructor at BAD(W) (British Admiralty Delegation (Washington)) but the USN pulled out of the project and a much more restricted refit substituted. All the drawings and info in USA was destroyed in 1945.

This was prepared by a DNC constructor at BAD(W) (British Admiralty Delegation (Washington)) but the USN pulled out of the project and a much more restricted refit substituted. All the drawings and info in USA was destroyed in 1945.

It is not detailed in the available very brief details, however I would suggest that the turret would be fully repaired as all the boiler rooms were to be.

Both. Mostly they do a design for a request but what I understand in Friedman's book that there were separate offers to countries as well for hoping they order a ship or two.

The expensive way of dealing with this is to buy all of Friedmans' books on RN warships, but even that won't cover everything.

I've scratched the surface with several articles for Warship and a book on cruisers which has pretty comprehensive basic data but very few illustrations. (compare the detail of my 1054 response with Tzoli's copy from Friedman's book - which should be acknowledged.
As for 1053 and 1054 see attachment. I guess this is an example of Vickers "shooting off spontaneous offers to various countries?"

Yes. Most of the Armstrong design numbers I've mentioned in my post cames from official Armstrong / Sir Eustace Henry William Tennyson d'Eyncourt papers (Which was photoed by mutal friend of ours (John French)) and like 90-95% of those papers lack drawings, mostly about costs or weight calculations.

Friedman and Brown/Moore remain the only sources for unbuilt British warships and auxiliaries.
Sadly there is noone younger focussing on the postwar RN and using material made available more recently.
Posters on this site who visit the NAO have done great work filling some of the gaps and Shipbucket sometimes has helpful info.

The next time I am down at Kew (National Archives) I intend on having a look at some recently released early 1990s naval files which might have some interesting things in them on frigates and carriers (for example it looks like there was a circa 1992 proposal to refit Ark Royal into a permanent LPH role).

Well, there are two pages from another source just above which includes references for more details from articles in journals such as
the (once quarterly, now annual) "Warship" and the American "Warship International" which have useful articles, which are not easy to find.. A wide range of journals (eg Engineering) have articles on warships, which sometime include discussion of unbuilt versions of RN or British built ships, though ships that were built are their more common subjects.

The ultimate sources are TNA at Kew, and the Ships Covers at NMM Woolwich, while most other relevant books and journals are available in the Caird Library at National Maritime Museum Greenwich.

When I pop my clogs I'll try to ensure that my library on warships, aircraft and military vehicles is available somewhere outside London. It's pretty extensive after some 60 years acquiring it. For example, I have a complete set of "Warship".

World of Warships has a 1943 RN Battle Cruiser design with 16inch guns (3*3). There is usually some element of reality to these, even if it is a bit tenuous sometimes. I cannot find any such design and it is not on your list. Can we therefore conclude it is purely an imagined ship?
