Hesham, you have to explain to our general readership that the 1 to 200 block was assigned to projects by Caproni Taliedo (Milan, the main company); 200 block were Taliedo's multiengines; the 300 block to Caproni Bergamasca (CAB); the 400 to Reggiane under chief designer Pegna; the 600 to Caproni-Predappio; Caproni-Vizzola hadn't a number block assigned, but designated aircraft with the first latter of the designer and a progressive number (e-g- F 1, 2, 3 etc to 7, paper plane witrh the wings of the F6, a slender fuselage and a DB-605 (same idea than the C.202 vs the C.205). Late in the war Count Caproni decided to assign the 8XXX block to new civilian projects. First, the Ca.8000 was a large transatlantic seaplane,

Oh yeah Skybolt,

the right man for Italian aircraft !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I´ll wait for your post.

Hi,

Caproni-Bergamasca

Ca.310 to Ca.314 multi-purposed aircraft.
Ca.320 three engined bomber.
Ca.330 twin engined project preceded the Ca.331.

Dana Bell's Directory of Airplanes also lists Ca.405, Ca.602 and Ca.603.
He also mentions Caproni-Bulgaria (with KB designs), Caproni-Vizzola (A designs), Caproni-Campini (only the CC.2), Caproni-Chiodo (CH.1), Caproni-Fabrizi (F designs), Caproni-Pensuti (a 1918 tyriplane), Caproni-Stipa and Caproni-Trigona. It appears most of the second names refer to the designers.

Yes. Usually they refer to aircraft designed independently from company strategies and then tendered to Caproni (normally directly to the Count) for prototype building. In this Caproni was rather an expection in Italy. Normally it was almost impossible for an independent designer to have his projects built by a company which not requested it.
Actually the F. (for Fabrizi) were official Caproni-Vizzola designs.

Hi,

Caproni Reggiane;

Ca.401 fighter/recce project.
Ca.410 recce/bomber floatplane project.

Hi,

Ca.94 and Ca.96 four engined heavy biplane bombers.

Hi all,
more and more questions...
Skybolt, do you know the Fabrizi designs F.1 t F.3? Can you post this projects (plus the F.7)? Was the F.7 the last Fabrizi project? Correct, Reggiane Re.8000 = Ca.8000? The one and only project for the Block 8XXX....
But many other questions are unaswered.... :-\

The next two questions: there is a Ca.200 and a Ca.400, also a Ca.300? or started Bergamasca with the Ca.301 ??? ???

Is the Ca.304 a version of the A.P.1 or the C.P.3 ???

Hope you can help...

Hi
I found your list with Caproni aircraft.
Now I am interrested in Breda but has also a question which has to do with Caproni.
Its concerning the Pensuti-Caproni, the little 1919 triplane.
Now I found (the same or a new plane) the Breda-Pensuti.
The Pensuti-Caproni was powered by a 3 cylinder Anzani and the Breda-Pensuti by a 80 hp Rotary (Gnome or LeRhone??).
What can you tell me, what do you have??
My interrests are: history/drawings/dimensions (as much as possible)/pictures/colors, but also construction details (and pictures/drawings which gives these details) technical information etc.
Thank for your help
Jan

I am stupid
Normally I check the pictures.
On what I found concerning the Breda-Pensuti it was mentioned that the engine was a 80 hp rotaro, what I translate as a rotary.
But after checking pictures I found that the engines was not a roraty but a 6 cylinder Anzani.
Still interresting in allkind of info/details
Jan

I've rationalized Hesham's original lists, combining corrections and additions (as well as a few added details of my own). I'll mount these broken down in 100-Blocks (although the Ca.2XX llist is very thin!).

I've listed powerplants but these are not exhaustive. In a few cases, to aid in further sub-type searches, I've noted Matricole Militari where known. Not too much should be made of these - a single prototype might have more than one MM number. Often, rebuilt aircraft will have new MM numbers assigned upon re-delivery to the RA and the original Matricola Militare assigned to an entirely different aircraft type.

Contemporary Italians loved putting periods into designations. I've omitted many of those periods in sub-type and engine designations. The aim was to simplified things and, hopefully, purists will forgive.

[1] This 'fan' 4-cylinder engine was chosen primarily for its low price. Franz Miller, despite his name, was a Sicilian. His engines were built by the Officine Miller Costruzioni Aeronautiche of Turin. (In 1909, Miller was joined by Antonio Chiribiri - who later formed Fabbrica Torinese Velivoli Chiribiri & C.) Officine Miller offered ultra-light aircraft engines in a range of outputs - "motori extraleggeri per aeronautica da 36, 45, 60, 70, 90, e 100 HP" - but note that 22 hp isn't mentioned!

* Caproni Bergamascha was originally Cantieri Aeronautici Bergamaschi. CAB was bought in 1929 and became a full Caproni subsidiary in 1931. Earlier CAB designs were built by Breda, Airone, and Caproni-AV.I.S. (AVio Industrie Stabiensi).

** Cesare Pallavicino designed a large number of aircraft. For Breda, he designed the Ba.15, Ba.18 , Ba.19, Ba.27, Ba.33, and Ba.39. For CAB, he designed the AP.1, CP.3, PL.3, and PS.1. For Caproni Bergamascha, he designed the Ca.135, Ca.308/Ca.309, Ca.335, Ca.331, and Ca.355.

Pallavicino went on to design the Argentinian I.Aé.30 Ñamcu. Projects Pallavicino 1 and 2 were R-R Derwent V jet-engined derivatives of the Merlin-powered Ñamcu.

*** Caproni Taliedo-built aircraft received their own designations. Although a Pallavicino design for Caproni Bergamascha, the Ca.135 was built at the Taliedo factory in Milan. Hence, the production bomber received a 'Century' designation rather than remaining the Ca.300 .

_________________

* OMI Reggiane retained its own Re. designations but the 400-Block was also assigned. Most, if not all, Ca.4XX designs were the work of Giovanni Pegna formerly of Piaggio. Aircraft given Ca.4XX designations were usually refered to as Caproni-Reggiane or simply Caproni designs.

Questions:
- Any designations for late '30s flying boat airliner design(s) by Ing. Pegna?
- Did 405 Savoia Marchetti SM.79 licence-built by Reggiane receive Ca.4XX numbers?

* Predappio refers to the factory location (in Emilia-Romagna) not a designer. The site was chosen by Caproni for political reasons (Predappio was the birthplace of Benito Mussolini).

** In competition with Breda Ba.92, Caproni Vizzola CV.3, Caproni Ca.214, CANSA FC.11, and IMAM Ro.71. Breda, Caproni-Predappio, and IMAM were each given contracts for two prototypes.

Questions:
- Might the Predappio-produced Ca.163/Ca.164 account for missing Ca.600/Ca.601 numbers?
- Did Predappio-built SM.81 (21229-21239) or Re.2001 (6547-6556) receive Ca.6XX numbers?

Caproni in Bulgaria

SFKB (Samoletna Fabrika Kaproni Bulgarski) or Airplane Factory Caproni, Bulgarian. The SFKB Kasanlak factory was originally completed (Dec 1926) as a Czechoslovakian Aero branch plant. It was bought by Caproni in 1930 (with a contract promising at least 10 years of use).

In Sep 1942, SFKB was nationalized and renamed DSF Kasanlak a branch plant of the Darzhavna Samoletna Fabrika or State Aircraft Factory (the main plant being Lovech).
