Project G - 'Submergible motorboat', originally intended for coastal defence (a 'fighter' concept, armed with two 450 mm torpedoes), prototypes later modified for special operations with the 10th Light Flotilla [Decima Flottiglia MAS].

First batch (prototypes)

  • CA 1 - Scuttled at La Spezia September 1943
  • CA 2 - Transferred to Germany in 1943, Scuttled in Bordeaux 1944

Program begun in first half of 1936. Construction took place at Caproni's Taliedo factory. The two prototypes were initially delivered to the Navy for trials and tests in 1938. After successful testing, prototypes were placed in storage at La Spezia, where they were discovered in 1941 by Commander Borghese. Rebuilt for the needs of the 10th Light Flotilla, in particular it's (fortunately abortive) Freetown & New York operations.

Second batch

  • CA 3 - Scuttled at La Spezia September 1943
  • CA 4 - Scuttled at La Spezia September 1943

Displacement increased to 4 tons. As with the prototypes, testing was successful, but the operational history of these two 'production' examples is unclear.
