Evgeny Damantsev is the famous Russian military analyst and commentator and here we have some comments from him :

''The Russian Arms Telegram channel reported that a key stage of the modernization is the integration of the RP-31MA Zaslon-AM (S-800AM) weapons control system with the 8BM passive phased array radar, which features a new, more powerful Baget-55-06 onboard digital computer instead of the Argon-15A.

The detection range for targets with an RCS of 3 square meters is 320 km, automatic tracking is 280 km, and the detection range for a fighter with an RCS of one square meter is 240 km. Twenty-four targets are simultaneously tracked, of which six are simultaneously engaged by missiles, compared to 10 and four targets in the previous version.

"Targets with an RCS of 0.7 square meters and flight speeds of up to 1,000 m/s, including 227-mm GMLRS projectiles from the HIMARS system, can be detected at a range of 135 km. The system is also equipped with R-37M ultra-long-range air-launched guided missiles with an effective intercept range of up to 230 km for maneuvering targets," writes Evgeny Damantsev in Russkoe Oruzhie.''

To be honest, this part just sound like he assigned some random (or guesstimate) RCS value to the detection range number already given in "Mig-31 Interceptor" by Yerfim Gordon and Dmitriy Komissarov

@Ronny

Very possible he did that. There is one 'mistery' by the way...

''Twenty-four targets are simultaneously tracked, of which six are simultaneously engaged by missiles, compared to 10 and four targets in the previous version.''

I think that this citation is in relationship with the old N007M Zaslon-M in MiG-31M but not with the newer N007AM Zaslon-AM in MiG-31BM.

MiG-31M really could engage six different targets with K/R-37M which happened on April 1994. There was data that Baget-55-06 enables N007AM can track 24 aircraft in TWS and can engage max 8 ( not 6) with 4 R-33/S or R-37M and 4 R-77-1 ( R-74).

Data could be found on this site ( of course in the earlier period) :

Isn't that just a Kinzhal(sp?) in black?

It is completely different missile. Soviet project from the 1980's was known as 30P6 'Contact' with AS-missile 79M6 and two prototypes of so called 'Product 07' were built : 071 blue and 072 blue. Both aircraft were left in Kazakhstan after 1991.

One of the main targets for the new ASAT could be USAF rocket plane X-37B.

Okay, agreed. Kinzhal has a pointier nose and different tail fin layout than the black beast.
It also appears somewhat shorter. Kinzhal goes from the lower intake lips to barely ending in front of the strakes underneath the aircraft. While the anti-satellite missile starts at a similar position but extends beyond the leading edge of the strakes. At least it looks like it on the photos above. Could also just be me needing new contacts or going back to my glasses

Was about to post, thanks for sharing.

Do we know about the status of MiG-31Is?
Are they already operational or still undergoing moderniztion and trials?

It is interesting that Ru MoD /VKS use in most cases that designation with the letter I not K ( K for Kinzhal as most sources mentioned).

There is about 30 operational MiG-31I/K's and all of them are in the 44. OAP (independent aviation regiment) in the Savasleyka AB as part of the DA ( Dalynaya Aviyatsiya). All MiG-31I/K were overhauled and converted from the version MiG-31DZ in the 'Sokol' plant in Nizhny Novgorod .

P.S.

As we can see, MiG-31K front cockpit is very similar to the MiG-29K/M cockpit with those 3 MFD/LCD's ,control stick and the thrust levers.

So according to the the FSB there was a plot orchestrated by Ukrainian and British intelligence to pay 3.000.000 USD to get a MiG-31K pilot/navigator to fly to Romania, Kinzhal included. Under the guise of defecting, while Russian sources insinuate the possibility of turning it into a false flag attack on Romania, having the MiG-31 shot down by AD systems during it's "attack". This kinda aligns with reports of previous issues incidents, one being such an attempt with a Tu-22M3 and another with a Mi-8. Whether the story is true or not, I let that everyone decide for themselves. Still relevant for the MiG discussion I'd say.

So if anyone here thinks about acquiring such an aircraft, it seems the bid of 3 Million is too low, lol.

Wonder if BM would also get new MFDs and other things. IIRC there was a program to further upgrade them.

Could explain the friendly fire incidents.

Colour me skeptical.
Eh, the Ukrainians are desperate and the British are cheap, so trying to wave just 3M around in order to get a wannabe Viktor Belenko wouldn't surprise.

Issue being however that not only is that not much money for getting shot at by the Russians and NATO but also that the Russians have established with that former Mi-8 guy who got his comrades killed what they do to defectors, even if they are in foreign countries.

MiG-31K in hot demand right now, as it seems.

So what? A russian drone just crashed in Romania several hours before. Again. Why the need for "false flag" operations?

There are enough reasons for retaliation from our side, even without a russian plane heading towards NATO airspace.

I will trust any uncorroborated story put forward by the FSB as far as I can throw their office.

Indeed.

How does this cock-and-bull story fit into what used to be a thread dealing with technology? Pure agitprop.

There are clearly not.
And at least for now, sane heads still mostly prevail.

Quite a believable story. Not even a very special one. And frankly strange that Ru special services themselves are unable to pull off anything similar.

Oh God... fsb.ru must be the most credible source ever, thanks for the news.

Would you rather trust the 'trustworthy' Western media over an official government report that happens to be published by Russia? In my book, both sides are biased, but what the government organization claims makes more sense to me.

Acknowledging this doesn’t legitimize anything, y'all are just being way too biased and straying out of logic (and the topic!).

Then you should not have posted this bit of guff.
I posted a statement of the FSB relating to the MiG-31.

''The creation of the automatic control and fuel supply system is a special chapter in the history of the D-30F6. It marked the first time in domestic practice that an electronic digital computer (RED-3048) was developed and implemented as the primary regulator for turbofan engine operating modes.
The electronic computing equipment was created by specialists from the Perm Aggregate Design Bureau (PAKB) under the leadership of A.F. Polyansky, and then G.I. Gordeev.

Due to the low reliability of the component base at that time, two control systems were installed on the D-30F6 engine: the main digital one – RED-3048 and the backup one – a hydromechanical ACS.
The ideology, algorithms, and refinement of the electronic-hydromechanical automatic control system and fuel supply were carried out jointly by the MKB and PAKB (currently, JSC STAR).''

Foxhound Vs Blackbird: Former MiG-31 Pilot explains how to Intercept and Shoot Down an SR-71 Mach 3 Spy Plane

https://theaviationgeekclub.com/fox...ept-and-shoot-down-an-sr-71-mach-3-spy-plane/

In the real life this would very unlikely to happen. The soviets did not succeed to stop Blackbird operations not even with their integrated air defence system and the Mig-25 interceptors, which were even faster than the Mig-31.

Now the locations of former soviet early warning radars is NATO teritory. And the russians have only around 100 aircrafts to cover their vast territory. The SR-71 can just appear at the russian border and go round the several bases which operate the Mig-31. The SR-71's designed cruise speed is bigger than the Mig-31 maximal speed, no chance of chasing the Blackbird from behind.
