McDonnell MD-12 ble først designet som enkeltdekk som stretchversjon av MD-11, men senere
utviklet som dobbeltdekk og MD-XX ble først designet som tvillingturbofans senere redesignet
som tremotorisert.

Tanken var at denne skulle produseres som MD-12, - "widebody dobbeltdekker" i full lengde med 4 motorer under vingene. Samtaler med Airbus førte ikke fram, men for drøyt 10 år siden presenterte Airbus A-380. Den kunne neppe komme nærmere den "tenkte" MD-12 som aldri ble noe.

Boeing asked for an exemption from the civil airworthiness certification process from the FAA. On September 23, 2008 the FAA denied the request killing the project. According to Flight International, the civil airworthiness certification process was "a time-consuming, costly process that effectively made it impossible to convert the military airlifter into a outsize cargo carrier for the commercial market."
