Kawanishi Type 17 Experimental Ground Bomber (K-100) and Nakajima Ki-82 : anyone have more about this ?
???
Nakajima Ki-82 was a experimental heavy bomber, only plan and terminated. I can't find any other information about this plane.

Hi! I get this drawing from Koku Asahi in 1943. This drawing is in the paper by Hideo Itokawa, designer of Ki-27, Ki-43 and Ki-44.
I believe this is the same concept of Nakajima N50 high speed carrier base recon.(later realized as Saiun)

And Saiun nose from FAMOUS AIRPLANES OF THE WORLD N0.108 CARRIER RECONNAISSANCE PLANE SAIUN, KOKU FAN.

blackkite very interesting drawings. The first one look a lot like the german heavy fighter project Arado Ar. E.561

http://www.luft46.com/arado/are561.html

Great pics, blackkite, thank you so much!! ;D

First time I've seen this N-35. Until now I always figured that the N-35 was the same as either the 7試 艦上攻撃機 or the 7試 艦上戦闘機, but apparently not.
So, was the N-35 the same as the Tokubaku ? And what competition did Nakajima submit it for?

blackkite, the page below clearly shows a DIFFERENT candidate for the "N-35" designation, the 7-Shi carrier fighter. So which is the correct version?

AMAZING. But how can people sell stuff like that on eBay??? This belongs in a museum. It's the industrial memory of your country!

This site is not eBay. ;D
It's someone's personal site. But we don't know who he is.
I think these design documents should belong to the museum or Japanese National diet library, too.
These documents are national treasures for us.
Japan is very bad situation for this area, especially Nakajima's design documents.

Please guess the mission and the specification of this twin engine aircraft. I guess the engine was HA54 5,000hp engine.

By the way, has anybody ever seen a photo, drawing or even a sketch of the Ki-44-III? This was a cancelled development of the Tojo with a 2000hp Ha-145, larger wings and tail and very heavy armament (2x 20mm + 2x 37mm!). Apparently a prototype was completed in June 1943.

I've never seen anything but some specs on that plane, and I've had my eye out for decades. The wing area was apparently only marginally increased over the -II. It would have been a hot ship!

BTW, Mr. Olsthoorn, your Ohka art is awesome.

I wish to know more about the elusive Nakajima planes:

Ki-13 is supposedly an Attack Aircraft, (Light Bomber?) or an army co-operation plane (Reconnaissance Plane?)
Ki-16 should be a Transport/Fuel Transport according to wiki
Ki-31 should be a light bomber
Ki-37 should be a Heavy Fighter
Ki-41 should be a Transport according to wiki

Ki-13 was a successor of 88-shiki reconnaissance aircraft and 94-shiki reconnaissance aircraft. Details are still unknown, mysterious attack/reconnaissance aircraft.
Ki-16 was a DC-2 based transport aircraft which carried cargo and passengers/soldiers.

Blacktitte

Thanks for the pictures. Do you have a 3d view of 88-shiki and 94-shiki. I can't find nothing online. Well one of 88-shiki but not very good.

Still no info on these Nakajima Projects?

Than I assume there will be non on these as well:

Nakajima Ki-52 Dive / Light Bomber
Nakajima Ki-53 Fighter or Heavy Fighter
Nakajima Ki-75 Fighter or Heavy Fighter

Escort fighter Nakajima Ki-53

In 1939 Rikugun Koku Honbu instructed the Nakajima company to start design work on a twin-engine, multi-seat fighter, named Ki-53 Shisaku Taza Sentoki (Experimental Multi-seat Fighter Aircraft, 試作多座戦闘機). In contrast to the two-seat, twin-engine heavy fighter Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu, the new aircraft was intended solely to escort bombers. Ki-53 should be flying within formations of heavy bombers and protect them from attacks by enemy fighters. It should be characterized by a very strong armament, and its performances should be comparable to heavy bombers performance. Although Ki-53 has been described as a fighter, it had not necessary capabilities for individual dog-fighting. He was rather a heavily armed element of bomber formations (a kind of gunship) and was even originally called Bakugeki Engoki (Bomber Escort Aircraft, 爆撃掩護機).

Ki-53 project was canceled at a very preliminary stage. Instead of building from scratch as a dedicated aircraft, the Nakajima company had proposed to develop heavily armed version of its heavy bomber Ki-49 Donryu, designed to perform the same tasks: escort bombers. The new machine received the designation Ki-58. Any planned tactical and technical data of Ki-53 are not known.

More little-known Japanese aircraft and projects see: http://e-samoloty.blogspot.com/ (unfortunetely only in Polish).

LAW

Hi! Ki-58.
中島キ58掩護戦闘機 : means Nakajima Ki-58 bomber escort fighter.
Ki-49-Ⅰ, 100-shiki heavy bomber Donryu(100式重爆撃機、呑龍) based Ki-58 was planned to guard formation edge of the bombers.
20mm cannon ×5, 12mm gun ×3, Crews : 10 or 11.
Completed only 3 aircrafts in 1940 and 1941, but test result was not satisfactory.
Ki-80(called commander aircraft) was a almost same aircraft.(Crew : 15),completed only 2 aircrafts.

Nakajima Ki-75 was planned as a two seat long range bomber escort fighter, cancelled in 1942.
Detail requirement by the IJA were not decided when cancelled.
Surce : The IJA military aircrafts perfect guide 1910 to 1945, Gakken, ISBN4-05-603757-4, 2005

Nakajima Ki-52 was planned as a dive bomber for Soviet union pillbox. Ki-52 was a modified version of Nakajima 11-shi carrier dive bomber.
Combat radius : 600km, Bomb ; 500kg.

Do we know when these projects born? Then we can specualte what type of engines they could have been used and maybe armaments as well

Ki-52 was planned in 1938, while D3N No.1 was completed in March 1938.
D3N's engine : Modified Nakajima Hikari(光) type-1 aircooling radial 9 cylinders, 660hp(485kw)/1980rpm/3500m, take off power, 820hp(603kw)/2150rpm.
Armaments : 97-shiki 7.7mm fixed gun×2(nose), 92-shiki 7.7mm rotating gun×1(behind after seat)

So basically no change except the removal of the equipments needed to land on a floating airbase yes? Thus a few kilometer extra range or km/h more speed

Thanks blackkite!

The Ki-101 was twin engined heavy fighter.

I couldn't find any info on this one, does anyone else know what this aircraft was, or was based on?

Hi Winston-san!
In summer 1943, the IJA ordered Nakajima to develop night fighter based on the IJN’s Gekko.
Ki-101 was a twin engine night fighter. The engine was HA-219(Nakajima HA-44,(NK11A, 2450hp in take off)), which was one of the most powerful engine in Japan at the day.(Same engine of Tachikawa Ki-94-Ⅱ and Nakajima Ki-87)
The armaments were forward direction one ~ two 30 ~ 40 mm cannons, and two 20mm cannons.
And revolution type 20mm cannons-equipped-at-a-battery type.
Maximum speed was 700km/h at altitude 10000m.
No.1 prototype was planned to complete in March 1945, but actual production never started.

Thank you blackkite, very informative! ;D interesting to hear of a plane designed from the J1N

Hi! My image for Nakajima Ki-62 experimental light fighter and Ki-63 experimental heavy fighter. ;D Of course these fighters needed radiator under middle or nose of the fuselage.

This drawing shows Zero type21, Reppu, Tenzan type11, Saiun. Also this drawing shows Nakajima's design philosophy for high speed aircraft.(small size, not fine shape)

This topic needs further trimming, so I've moved all the discussion of the Nakajima NAF-2 and related designs to a page we already had that tackled the same subject:

http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,18373.0.html

Hi Folks

I've been enjoying my copy of "Japanese Aero-engines" by Goodwin and Starkings.

On Page 165 appears the following statement: "The Navy was [also] evaluating the J2M2 around August 1942 and finding its engine installation troublesome. Nakajima was invited to offer a competitive aircraft design and proposed a Navy version of the Ki-44-II... but the project was not approved for development."

Anyone know anything further about this project (drawing, etc.)? Could it be the source of the missing SADP N-30 designation? Blackkite?

Best Regards, Harry

Ummm........Give me time.
It's the first time for me to see such a information.

Thanks, Blackkite-san!

If it helps, the authors go on to say that the engine for this proposal was a HA-41 (Ha-109) derivative equipped with a 2-stage supercharger. It was known as the (Navy) NK5A or (joint) HA-34-11.

Hmmm.....I can't get any valuable information what you need still now. Very hard.
I checked FAMOUS AIRPLANES OF THE WORL No.16 ARMY TYPE 2 FIGHTER "SHOKI". And Japanese internet sites.

Always Ki-62 : for Ki-63 i have seen two alternate ki-63 ( what if ) but nothing related with real ki-63
