McDonnell-Douglas F-15 Projects

Does anybody know if the F-15U was the same length or longer than the F-15E?

Is it a version of Professor Geoffrey Hill's aero-isoclinic wing for roll control or just incidence variability?

Patent for Model 265 is here : http://www.google.com/patents?id=m0Q4AAAAEBAJ which explains the purpose of the variable incidence wings on that design. According to the VLF report I read, the wings can be moved differentially for roll control.

Anybody have pictures of the original Strike Eagle demonstrator when they loaded it up with THREE 30mm gatling gun pods?

Well, the variable incidence wing AFTI F-15 was tested in the Langley windtunnel.

nice RF-15 images.

Does anyone know if there were ever any studies (perhaps in support of export proposals or even the naval F-15 proposals) for the F-15 to be equipped for probe and drogue aerial refuelling?

Regards,

Greg

Hi Greg -

I have not seen anything in the archives at our Museum and looking at the airframe packaging, don't see offhand where it would go unless it ended up being an external plumbing job. Our Museum Curator worked on the F-15 program throughout the design and flight test phase and was not aware of any requirement or later requests to do that.

HTH! Mark

Interesting short article about the F-15 WW:

In 1994, the USAF awarded a contract to McDonnell Douglas to explore the feasibility of adapting the F-15C to the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) role --- the so-called Wild Weasel mission currently performed by the two-seat F-4G Phantom II. As part of the program, it is proposed that eight F-15C aircraft be converted to fire the AGM-88 HARM antiradiation missile. Additional avionics for the SEAD role would be provided in distinctive "cheek" fairings.

If the eight aircraft in the proposal are actually funded, Initial Operational Capability (IOC) should occur in August of 2000. However, the Air Force is skeptical about the feasiblity of a modified F-15C for the Wild Weasel mission, preferring a two-seat aircraft for this role. The aircraft that the USAF would REALLY like to have for the Wild Weasel role is a modified two-seat F-15E, but this is considered much too expensive an option in the current military drawdown environment. The USAF is also considering an adaptation of the F-16 for the Wild Weasel mission, in light of Israeli success in using specially-adapted two-seat F-16s for air defense suppression missions.

Probably a sensor fairing much like the re-use of the F-4E gun fairing on the F-4G Wild Weasel.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Looks like f-15 production won't end until 7 years after f-22's have ended.

The fact that the aircraft designed to replace the F-15 finishes production 7yrs beforehand. Is somewhat amusing.

Meh. U-2 production continued after the Blackbird's ended. Hell the U-2 is going on two decade's service beyond the retirement of the Blackbird. Doesn't mean the Blackbird sucked (which is undoubtedly what "Stargazer" was insinuating).

I thought it was amusing as well, but it's not because I think the aircraft suck. One does not have to have negative view on the aircraft's capabilities to find the fact funny. It's amusing in the irony of the fact itself. To jump on Stargazer like that I think is a little unfair.

If that's all he meant then my apologies.

I thought F-15C production ended long ago?

I think it is the current F-15E Strike Eagle version which is still in production.

I don't think any more real F-15E are being built or planned. The current versions and in pipeline are modified for foreign requirements, such as F-15K for korea. The 2019 one is F-15SA for Saudi Arabia with FBW.

Right - those variants are based on the F-15E. The F-15C, which the F-22 replaces, ended production in 1985 or so.
