Highly interesting Nugo...
Can you add any sources if possible ?

Douglas internal designation was on par with Lockheed as far as complexity: in 1950 they were already around 1200.. and using alphabetical suffixes too... I suspect that Provence-born man living in California has something up his sleeve... but who dares asking ? ;D

the D. 571 is the F4D-1 "Skyray"
the D. 671 is the D. 558-2 "Skyrocket"

D. 855 COIN-Project of 1964
D. 566 like the N.A. AJ

sorry I have the D.414 as C.74 ???

Hi,

the D-414 was C-68,before I continue,there is a subject will make
a big argument, the Douglas company in its model series had no sense,
and I think the company added 500 and 1000 to its designation system
to many not all of its aircraft and projects.
For examples, the C-132 was model 1814,the real design D-814,and the
C-133 model 1333,real design D-833,and douglas 1940 four engined
airliner project,real design D-940.
Of course I don't know the reasons that made the Douglas did this.

Which was the method in madness ? Who knows ? The turboprop bomber projects tendered in late '40s were D-122X.

My dear skybolt,

the Douglad D series for aircraft and projects were used for the
improved version also,for your example,the D-122 may be,was an
old turboprop bomber, and the D-122X was developed from it.

this seems a good place to ask ; what are F1D and F2D now that the Skyknight was F3D ?

Easy question, complicated answer ;) ...

There was a Douglas FD (not "F1D", because this "1" was always omitted in the Navy's designation system) in 1933 (only a single XFD-1). By 1943, when the Navy ordered jet figher prototypes from McDonnell, Douglas did not design fighters any more, and so the letter "D" was also assigned to McDonnell, and the "Phantom" jet became the FD (the duplication of the old, and obsolete, FD designation was standard procedure at that time). Next came the McDonnell "Banshee", designated F2D. But then Douglas re-entered the fighter business with the F3D design. Because it was obviously impractical to use the same letter for two companies designing aircraft in the same category ("F" in this case), McDonnell's letter was changed to "H". So FD/F2D became FH/F2H, and there was never any F2D from Douglas.

thanks for the reply ; ı have searched for the early Douglas , but found nothing on it .Does anyone have more info ?

Well said!!

So, if you contribute lists of numbers in this subforum, please provide your source! If you can't (because you didn't record the source, and now can't remember), you can still list your info but please say explicitly, that you don't know the source.

Thank you!
