Woah, and Jeff Cox has a couple of interesting models of well known projects... see the DC-9 Models collection.

And a picture of a model at

(couldn't see this link posted anywhere else...)

Artist's impressions of Douglas DC-8 Skybus in 1946.

Aside from the re-engined DC-7D shown previously, Douglas proposed this interesting idea for its DC-8 back in 1946. The unusual aircraft was powered by two engines arranged in tandem turning contra-rotating pusher propellers. The DC-8 airliner enthusiasts have come to love is, of course, a vastly different design. Wow, thanks for this thread. I don't know how I missed it the first time. I've been looking for pics of this and the cockpit of the XB-42 for years. I actually found some pics of the XB-42 interior in a back issue of AAHS. Thanks for such an awesome find, even it is belated on my part.

Just received this link to an AB Aerotransport document for sale in Sweden showing a four-engined DC-8 "Skyking Junior",
contra-props at front and rear.

Quite a find, this! Makes me wonder though... why would Douglas call this the Skyking Junior unless there was a plain Skyking aircraft somewhere in the picture? Was the Skybus supposed to become the Skyking in production form?

Yes, 4 Allison Y-1710, 603 km/h as speed , range of 5800 km .

i don't know how many passengers was projected to carry ! ???

So there are a "little difference " with Douglas Dc-8 of 1957

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-8 ;D
I have seen that original proposal of DC-8 Skybus was two Allison V-1710

Splendid! Thanks for sharing.

This particular design was an answer to the ATA-A1 and ATA-B1 Aircraft Specifications, prepared by the ATA Committee on Aircraft Requirements and issued by the Air Transport Association of America, Inc., Washington, D. C. These specs were said to have been "drawn from past airline operating experience, in an effort to furnish the air traveler with improved service at lower cost."

Another airliner study from a 1947 issue of Aeroplane to go on the forum, if you do not already have it.

A Mythical DC-8.

Hi all,
the Douglas Model 1004 was a project for a passenger aircraft derived from the XB-42 Mixmaster. Same powerplant and drivetrain (2 Allison V-1710 driving 2 contraprops mounted in the tail) and cabin for about 45 passengers.
