So the sale of the JF-17 to Azerbaijan is now finally officially confirmed. One question that I have got though is how many will they buy?

per Huitong: "A $1.6b contract was reportedly signed between PAC and Azerbaijani AF in February 2024 including 8 JF-17Cs and 4 JF-17Bs. "

That was my thinking also Anduriel, to buy enough only for a squadron seems a bit daft. Though I would think that Azerbaijan will buy more in the future.

"At the IDEAS 2024 exhibition held in Karachi from November 19 to 22, Pakistan unveiled the model of its future fighter jet, the JF-17 PFX."

Really? Ehm..

There is indeed lots of noise around about this project and even if YES indeed, they announced it with much fanfare and this "teaser", the realistic analysts tend to agree, it will most likely some sort of a program to make the JF-17 even more indigenous with more Pakistani systems and to be built totally in Pakistan.

Some fan-boys however think it will be an upscaled (by 25 %) JF-17MAX-PRO-like type with a more powerful engine and as such a single engined stealthy fighter! IMO totalyl unrealistic.

So Pakistan is to build it's own next generation fighter would this totally replace the JF-17 or somhow complement it?

Rebels shoot down Myanmar JF-17 fighter jet

I can understand why an obsolete design like the FTC-2000G got shot down, but I assumed the JF-17 was in terms of ECM well equipped to handle a threat from a basic weapon like a Stinger knockoff used by poorly trained rebels. Did Myanmar not purchase the jamming pod that the PAF uses for extra protection ?

ECM and jamming pod does nothing against IIR weapons, also FN-6 isn't a
Stinger knock off and is in fact better than Stingers due to having a digital IIR seeker. FTC-2000G isn't a obsolete design either, it is still produced till this day. FTC-2000 series is basically a cheap jet trainer that could also double as a light attack aircraft. If this JF-17 is shot down via MANPADS then it's probably caught with its pants down when landing or taking off. Very little it could do against such a attack IMO.

Simply since this is NOT a JF-17, but indeed a FTC-2000!

I must confess, for months Reuters has been writing about this and that arms deal – strangely often involving the JF-17 – from all over the world, even though hardly any other sources, which usually report on such things early, even mention them in passing... I would therefore be very, very careful!

Only the Egyptian AF come close. :eek: :eek: :eek:

Imagine a military exercice between Egypt and Indonesia air forces. Together they would have (almost) the full and entire inventory of modern fighter jets, whatever the generation - 4, 4.5, 5, 6 ... It wouldn't be an exercice but Le Bourget or Farnborough air show LMAO.

A SIPRI Arms Transfers Database entry dated March 9, 2026 indicates Azerbaijan has ordered 40 ASELPOD targeting pods from Türkiye for JF-17 Block III fighter aircraft expected from Pakistan. If accurate, the procurement suggests Baku intends to field its incoming fighters with an integrated precision-strike capability from the start.

I believe it'll be the uprated version of ASELPOD with data-link, megapixel MWIR sensor and aerodynamic changes;
