Another possible explanation is that the ten engine design was (likely unknowingly) studied in relation to the Tube Alloys project. The description of the fuselage as "unnecessarily large" may be a clue here, as very few, if any, officials at the Air Ministry would have known anything about the ongoing atomic bomb research at that time (1942).

Hmmmm...
But not so large B-29 carried atomic bomb to Japan at the day. :-[

Only because General Groves refused to use the Lancaster, which could carry the Fat Man and Little Boy, and kicked off the B-29 Silverplate mods.

Apologies - I'm new to the forum, not even sure if I'm posting under the correct topic and don't know much about aircraft (I'm an engine man !) but it relates in part to the 100 ton bomber.

I have a 1942-43 file for the Rolls Royce 46-H-24 engine (later known as the Eagle 22). It has significant detail on the engine which at the time was under development, which in layout is essentially an upsized Napier Sabre.
The file also includes installation/proposal drawings for this engine in at least 4 aircraft;
1.Typhoon II
2.Tempest
3.Centrally engined (i.e. behind the pilot with a shaft drive to the contra airscrew) fighter with 4 nose cannon
4.6 engined (plus 6x thrust augmenters) 100 ton cargo aircraft (19200bhp plus 43200lb take-off thrust, calculation dated 16.3.43)
Although aircraft section drawings are included, there appear to be no manufacturers mentioned (though the first two are presumed) but there is one drawing APD1031 described as 'preliminary profile of engine prepared for Bristol Aeroplane Co.', dated 12.12.42. The aircraft views look quite Brab-like but with a Lanc-like tail.

Hope this is of interest ?

I also have an additional file for a proposed high altitude, 5 engined Lancaster, but that's another topic.

Welcome aboard Liberty 12,

and we glade to get anything new,but for engines,it has a anther section, for five
engined Lancaster, yes we want to see it.

Liberty 12: I'd love to see that mid-engined, contra-prop fighter project too. It sounds like your collection warrants a new thread for Rolls Royce 46-H-24 powered aircraft proposals :)

That 46-H-24 Tempest would be the P.1027 but your Typhoon II is a bit of a puzzle. BTW, there was also the P.1032, an Eagle-powered Fury proposal.

Typhoon II was a Typhoon converted with the new wing that led to Tempest, according to Chris Thomas who was the Typhoon Tempest expert specialist at Air-Britain. I've got a note/drawing about it from him after I had asked him a number of questions some years ago.

Hi. Apologies for the delay. Being new to this forum I've tried to get my head around the range of topics discussed and where to put the info I have. You have an amazing range and depth of stuff.

Attached here most of 1 drawing that compares a 46-H-24 installation with Napier Sabre but over the weekend I'll start a new topic under propulsion and put the RR H engine stuff there and maybe start new threads for 1. centre RR H engined fighter 2. 5 Merlin engined high altitude Lancaster and leave the RR H engined heavy transport (100 ton) in this topic ? There's probably a better way so please let me know !
