PHA's were planned before the PH 75 in the early 70's as a replacement for the Arromanches. It envolved into the more well-known PH-75. I'm hoping that the upcomming book by Moulin and Jordan about french carriers will give little more info of them.

Here's couple submarine designs: E48 preluded the Narval class and the two iterations of the SNC 68 were nuclear attack submarines projects prior the SNA 72 Rubis class.

Why the blunt bow for SSN? An attempt to save money be using SSBN design? In general, why did the French accept a teardrop hull so late?

As for the blunt or "axe" bow in French submarines, they seemed to prefer it in the 1960's design and did not adopt proper teardrop shape until with the Amethyste and Le Triomphant. I don't know the exact reason.

Data on the PHA:s is limited to what is written in the Conway's All the world Fighting Ships section about PH 75: It states that the preceeding conventional designs were of 20,000-22,000t waterline lenght of 187-200m and speed 27kts. They were supposed to have the 55,000shp machinery as in C67 (Tourville class).

The designs of SNC 68 differ in shape and probably in size. Larger one has the same distinctive shape of the Redoutable Class SSBN.
