Greetings All -

A recent EPay buy was this print of the Advanced Interceptor concept dated 1969. We have this elsewhere in the thread but worth posting nonetheless. Also obtained was this print of the LTV Universal Hypersonic Test Vehicle concept from 1968.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

AI-500 Series
"This configuration series emerged as the Phase I Cycle Screening and preliminary configuration sizing studies were being completed. It was indicated that use of twin powerplants and/or twin air induction systems might reduce system weight and simplify integration of extremely large powerplants with the airframe." [/size]From Advanced Airbreathing Interceptor Concept Studies Volume 1 - Summary Vought Aeronautics Division 1969

AI-500
"A large delta wing carried underslung nacelles and folding tips for aerodynamic center control and high speed directional stability improvement. All-moving canard surfaces are mounted outboard of the nacelles to minimize interference with the inlets. Relative location of the wing, body, and nacelle components of this configuration offer unusual potential for wave drag minimization through desirable interference between components. A number of configuration variants were thus developed to explore achievable aerodynamic benefits of this general arrangement."

These ought to satisfy Scott's need for measurements. Did not find measurements for AI-0400 but the drawing on the base point configurations chart implies a larger vehicle than the other configurations.

I also have a copy of a Marquardt preliminary engine performance report for the SERJ-176E-4A supercharged ejector ramjet engine for Mach 0-4.5. I'll get that scanned and posted too.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Greetings All -

I made a point of looking for powerplant related material on this trip and found a few items along those lines. I'll post a Marquardt report shortly.

The following Pratt & Whitney images were in a report but nothing else separate and distinct about the P&W engine options. The AI-0507B15725 drawing was presented with these engine drawings.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

The attached GE drawing was the only reference I found to any of their designs/products.

The Air Induction System, engine and installation drawings were in the Marquardt document and I am including it here to highlight it outside of reading/perusing the whole report.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

You know had they used LCH4 they could have made the SERJ idea work even better... use the LCH4 vaporizing to spin the engine; then burn it with the air

This is a model of a LTV Mach 3 project with turbo-ramjet, exhibited at Le Bourget 1971, from Aviation Magazine 565.
I've searched for an appropriate thread to post this but I didn't find one.

On picture in this topic wing has clear edge as fighter but it seems AI-0105K had two bombbays in wings every for three bombs (system as A-5A Vigilante). Was it bomber?

PlanesPictures,

In all the material I looked through and the mission profiles that Mark and I have posted to this topic, nothing mentioned or pointed to it having a secondary or another mission as a bomber. Most everything is about the ZAP mission profiles and the AI-603/604 did have some radar and weapons employment information. I don't recall seeing anything off hand for the AI-100/105, but has been awhile since I looked at my notes. What you highlighted in the drawing might be a fanciful concept of an AAM or something we have yet to find....................................

In going back and looking there was this image of a briefing slide that does show an Air to Ground mission for the AI-505 the specific letter is blacked out when the slide was declassified. It shows a 4,000 lb ordnance load and a radius of 1055 NM. VAHF archives.

Another aspect of the program that dd not get much attention in the earlier posts is the pitch for a Universal Hypersonic Test Vehicle UHTV and the Advanced Unmanned Interceptor variants of that concept.

Attached is a concept art slide of the UHTV, drawings of AUI-1, AUI-2 and some Time To Intercept information for even more advanced versions of the concept that I do not have drawings of AUI-3, AUI-3P/J or AUI-4P.

Probably not bomb but air-to-ground missile due to back of object and place for rocket engine. As source I have only this picture(s) from this topic. AI-103 and AI-103A have air-to-air missile but AI-105A2 and AI_105K (they differ only in engine exhaust) have probably air-to-ground missile
