You can see a bit of VC.7 style and influence in some of those early Vanguard designs in regards to nose and tail shape and layout.

Thank you my dear Hood.

Does anyone have information on the design transition from Viscount to Vanguard.

Particularly the issue of a pure jet Viscount - along the lines of Nene Viking and Tay Viscount.
On forum the Vickers project numbers have 850 Viscount Major and 870 Jet Viscount - but have been unable to find any info on these studies.

There is a note on web saying a jet viscount was proposed to Continental in 1959 or thereabouts.

From, Vickers Aircraft Since 1908.

Dear Fredgell, I understand the fuselage diameter of the Viscount is the same as the diameter of the fuselage lower lobe in the Vanguard's double-bubble fuselage. I did post images of stretched Viscount (the original 800 version) and early Vanguard artist's impressions/models in this site before; no doubt they've been "merged" into some unrelated topic.

The V.800 stretched Viscount in the back ground & the V.900 Vanguard......
I've been unable to find the earlier posts you mentioned re fuselage design transition unfortunately. Elsewhere Hood posted a link to Stuck on Drawing Board p51 which has a diagram showing a 4 Nene Viscount dated 1956 - I'm sure the press clipping re late 50s proposal mentioned different engines. Avons might have been appropriate by then.

Are you in the UK Fredgell? have you been to the Brooklands archives? What you're seeking might be there?

Does anybody have copies of either of these articles:

Flight 1955: Vickers-Armstrongs' new Airliner
The Aeroplane 1958, titile unknown but a long article describing the development of the Vanguard

Both make reference to studied versions with 6,500lb thrust 'baby Conways'.

Why yes :)

Vickers Vanguard from The Aeroplane 19 Dec 1958

This is the article on development, there are other Vanguard articles in this issue.

A study in November, 1953, of a V.870 for T.C.A. with baby Conways of 6,500-lb. thrust was equally unfavourable. It showed that, for a transcontinental operation with 17,500- lb payload, the jet was 7,000 lb. heavier, 7-8 % more expensive ,12 knots faster and 2% faster on the approach. For a transatlantic operation , taking off from Shannon at 105,000 lb., it could carry 8,000 lb. of payload compared with 13,500 lb. by a turboprop at the same weight.

Flight 1 Dec 1955 "Evolution of the Vanguard"

It was at this point that it became apparent that, whatever form the new airliner took, it would have to have a new powerplant designed for it; and this has, of course, proved to be the case. In place of the V.850 there came a design derived along an entirely different track—a medium-range Viscount replacement powered by four "baby Conways." These by-pass turbojets, of what might be termed medium thrust, promised to be exceptionally small and efficient, and various aircraft and powerplant configurations were examined, the majority having the engines mounted in nacelles either on the wing or fuselage. Such an aircraft would have been considerably faster than any existing medium-range transport (excluding the Comet) and would easily have exceeded the stipulation of a 370-knot cruising speed asked for by Mr. Peter Masefield, then the Corporation's chief executive. Nevertheless, it was aiso found practicable to meet this speed requirement with an advanced turboprop aircraft, and a study of the by-pass and turboprop projects proceeded in parallel over an intensive period, with the close co-operation of Rolls-Royce. Many factors had to be considered but, as the work progressed, it became increasingly evident that the by-pass aircraft was not an entirely happy solution. In particular, it could be faulted on the grounds of inadequate flexibility of operation, rather high airport noise, and a rather poorer operating specific fuel consumption than that of the airscrew-driven machine. It also posed a rather difficult take-off problem. Consequently the Weybridge designers hardened on a turbo-prop aircraft.
