Re: Italian all-wing aircraft

the Hoffman momoplane, illustrated in the link above, looks very like the 'Arup' series of aircraft, see here:-

View: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nxz1UF67EQI

also see here for a 'flying flounder', to go with the 'flying plaice', and some custer channel wing stuff, and, some Horton wingless plane footage,

View: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8y5suPs1uE

there's also a very good article in one of my 'Aeroplane Monthly's, about the arups, will find it out, as and when.

cheers,
Robin.

Re: Italian all-wing aircraft

The plane posted by Hesham is one of the numerous projects by Piana-Canova, who developed the rhomboidal wing. It flew only in sailplane form, but it flew very well. Projects span from light sportplanes to huge boatplanes and bombers. During the mid-30s Piana-Canova had some exchanges with Alessandro Marchetti that went as far as a brief proposal for a rhomboidal-wing version of the S-84.

Welcome back, Justo... :)

Re: Italian all-wing aircraft

Thanks Skybolt!

I have posted a small drawing of the Alfa 1101.
I would be grateful for any additional information on this engine, which is of great interest to me.

So, i think it's highly likely that the Hoffman who designed the Hoffman monoplane, is the same Hoffman who helped to design the Arups.

Indeed, Raoul Hoffman designed the Arup S1 and S2 before moving to Florida where he designed his "All Wing"
.
Ralph Grainchen was the designer of the Arup S3 and S4.

Re: Italian all-wing aircraft

Along or after his PC-100 (experimental glider), PC-140 (touring aircraft) and PC-500 (competition glider), it seems that Piani-Canova has designed an experimental aircraft that can be used as a trainer aircraft, the PC-85; and, after WWII, a jet aircraft, both equipped with rombhoïdal wing.
Is there documention available on those two last projects?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Italian all-wing aircraft

The Canova monoplane , PC-140 I'm guessing, would make an easy to build full scale ultalight.
The drawings posted on this forum shows ailerons and center trailing edge elevator. I found
pictures of this model online that showed Junkers type aileron and elevators below the trailing edge
in their own airstream. Please comment if you know the specifics of the Canova monoplane's control surface arrangement.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1242669

shows the control surfaces as mentioned.

symbol related to PC series ?.

It seemed to be this series for a Projects or Drawing numbers (Suffix "C").

We must don't forget the PC.1600 heavy fighter Project, which I hope to get a drawing
to it.

Hi,

I think we must change this title into Piana Canova Airplanes and Projects.

He started with a PC-I of 1908,it was a single seat monoplane powered by one engine, the PC-II was a three-seat monoplane of 1910/11,the PC-III was a seaplane biplane with swivel fuselage of 1914.

He also designed a three-seat pusher monoplane in 1912.

A jet aircraft with a rhomboid wing was projected, but no more details are known ?.

Hi,

Mr. Piana Canova emigrated to Brazil in 1919 and returned in 1931,if some had
a book about Latin American aviation,we can know his activities about aviation
there ?.

Hi,

when I check from my files,I found that Mr. Piana Canova designed a three engined heavy bomber Project of flying wing shape, does anyone hear about it ?,sorry I don't remember the source.

Anybody who has searched Flaminio Piana Canova's name on Google Images has probably seen these pictures before, they were posted on Facebook with the names "Bat" and "Pelican", which one is which? The 2-engine one looks like the C34 configuration from the table you guys posted.

Flaminio Piana Canova was a true genius and we need to do more research on him.
Some sources online claim he died in 1938 but we know he was active later.
He was similar to the Horten brothers or Jack Northrop, in that he studied and built flying-wing and all-wing aircraft.
Is it true he also designed a jet plane?
