But, wasn't the SMV supposed to be unmanned? The pic you posted shows a cockpit. In fact, that resembles one of the 'TAV' concepts. It was shown in a picture (I can't locate it at the moment) featuring a frontal view of a craft like the one in your picture powering off a runway with the aid of a turbofan-festooned craft that seemed mostly wing.

the craft in the image is the 'space orbiting vehicle, SOV', which, quote,' is the "bus" that will caryy the SMV and other satellites into orbit'

I remember that! It's an issue from 1999, isn't it? I remember spending time in my ship's library sketching that out of their copy of AWST.
