Hello everyone! Introduce you to a very interesting Chinese transport plane!

In 1969, China put forward a plan to build large transport aircraft. Soon after, engineers designed the Y-9 (1969) with reference to Lockheed C-141A.
This is the data of Y-9 (1969):
The maximum flying speed is 900 to 950 kilometers per hour, the cruise speed is 743 kilometers per hour, the take-off thrust ratio is 0.30, the maximum climb rate is 27 to 32 meters per second, the practical lift limit is 11,500 to 12500 meters, the maximum load range is 7,000 to 7,500 kilometers, and the take-off and slide distance is 1 It is 390 to 1500 meters, and the landing taxi distance is 1270 to 1400 meters.

In fact, according to China's technical level and material conditions at that time, it was impossible to realize the research and development of a large transport aircraft like Y-9. Therefore, in mid-1971, the research and development of the Y-9 project was interrupted. Although Y-9 is an unrealistic "rhapsody", it provided a reference for the later research and development of large and medium-sized transport aircraft in China, and also always warned of the importance of the spirit of Chinese to "seeking truth from facts".

Later, the name "Y-9" was used in a derivative of the Y-8.

I suppose this was related to China efforts to get Spey turbofans and reverse-engineer them ? At some point was also a larger derivate of the Tu-16 with better engines.
No surprise nothing happened in 1971... China's aerospace efforts were kind at rock bottom, due to political circumstances in that (very) troubled era, late Mao era was pretty nightmarish. Lin Biao died that year in still mysterious circumstances.

I'm glad to hear from you! I think so. The Y-9 is very likely an upgrade of Tu-16.
