Junkers Ju 85/88/188/388 & 488 - Projects, Prototypes and Variants

Hi everyone,

I just came across this blogpost on a French post-war research project that used a Ju 88 as a test bed for ram jet engines:

The airframe was cleaned up a bit compared to its wartime configuration, but I'm still quite impressed that the French Ju 88 was flown to Mach 0.7 on two occasions! :)

I'm currently searching for good scale drawings of the Junkers Ju388 (glass nose) and would be very grateful for any help or pointing me in the right direction.
I've searched the internet but have not found anything at a high enough resolution to see clearly. :eek:

Hi Peter, I am currently working on a 388 in Sketch-Up. If you have Sketch-up and want a copy I can oblige, but please bear in mind its incomplete.

In the Ju 388 book mentioned above, probably the best drawing showing what you are interested in is inside the back cover. It is an enhanced copy of microfilm images from USNASM. A similar, but much sharper image can be found on pages 256 and 257 of Junkers Ju 88 volume 1, #23 in the Classic luftwaffe series. The advantage of the one in the Ju 388 book is that it is pretty well dimensioned. Both are copies of original JFM drawings.

Bei Besprechung am 19.1. Überlegung Do 335 mit Schleif- oder Schleppkörper. Junkers soll Entwurf für 388 zu Ende führen. Als Endziel wird Anlagenunterbringung im Starrschleppkörper angesehen.

Gen.Qu.6.Abt requests the 388 as a mine-clearing aircraft (replacement for the Ju-52). Investigations at Junkers are underway.

At the meeting on January 19th, the Do 335 with a towed hull was considered. Junkers is to finalize the design for the 388. The ultimate goal is considered to be the integration of equipment into the rigid towed hull.

In the book Masters of the Air by Donald L. Miller, there is this sentence: "The Germans had already tried to hit London with combat-damaged Junkers 88 bombers guided by automatic pilot." Apparently, this is not about the (in)famous Mistel aircraft. The AI suggested that such Ju 88s could have been deployed in small numbers during the operation Steinbock in 1944, but all my efforts to find more details about them have been unsuccessful. Can someone provide a help? Or is this only an error? Many thanks in advance.

Oh wow! This is something interesting. It makes sense that a Ju-88 would've been considered for this honestly, though I never expected that they actually did! Thanks for posting.

Junkers Ju 88 G-6 with 2 additional turbojet engines - "Mosquitojäger"
(Werneuchen proposal for combating the Mosquito nightfighter)

The maximum speed is 615 km/h at an altitude of 6.1 km (combat power + 2 turbojet engines) with SN-2 (Lichtenstein radar) and Fla-V (flame damper) without external fuel tanks. With a 900-liter auxiliary fuel tank and a takeoff weight of 14.4 tons, the fuel is sufficient for 1 hour of combat power with turbojet engines + 1 hour of continuous operation without turbojet engines at an altitude of 6 km.

In 1943, investigations were conducted using a Ju 88 equipped with two BMW 003 engines. With these jet engines, the speed increased to 730 km/h.
Additionally, flight tests took place in November 1943 involving a Ju 88 long-range reconnaissance aircraft fitted with two additional BMW 003 jet engines.

Hello, is the ju 388 J basically a projected but not realized variant?
I got the special hobby kit today (with their me 264 and dornier 317).

No. Three Ju 388Js were completed before production priority shifted to the 'K.

Those prototypes were the Ju 388V-2 (W.Nr. 500 002), 'V-4 and 'V-5. The Ju 388V-2 (a converted Ju 188T airframe) had external antennae for its FuG 220 radar - as intended for the production Ju 388J-2. The Ju 388V-4 and 'V-5 were thimble-nosed as per the planned Ju 388J-3 and 'J4.
