Recently, while reviewing online sources, I came across several third-party articles mentioning that the Sapfir-23MLAE2 radar equipped on the MiG-23MLD possesses a distinctive feature not found in earlier variants of the Sapfir-23 series: namely, a vertical scanning mode covering -6° to +45°, designed for automatic target acquisition during close-range air combat.
Does this imply that earlier MiG-23 variants—such as the MiG-23ML and MiG-23MLA, equipped with the Sapfir-23ML and Sapfir-23MLA radars respectively—lack this capability? So far, I have been unable to locate definitive documentation confirming this distinction, and so I am posting here to seek assistance. I would greatly appreciate any insights or references from the community.
