I heard it was just the institute's own project. If this is just to prove that you are capable of developing vertical take-off and landing aircraft yourself, as a technical preparation, will it be applied to the next generation of fighter jets?

For pure research without practical implications, this is expensive and not very useful. I.e. there's some overflow of data into normal jet CTOL performance, but you may as well make a simpler demonstrator just for that alone.

The files @Tomboy mentions are a massive effort, it is a very expensive program, run in a place(Guizhou) that will require a significant investment to make it possible.

In which case this hypothetical engine would be using reheat, with a large expansion nozzle, tuned for sea level and and low velocity (large expansion nozzle) . This would control the heat, help with hot gas reingestion, and the clutch and parasitic power drain on the main engine would be much lower than F-35B, which means the plane can fly with a much less powerful engine.

Afair, Hawker's proposed successor to the Harrier would've used a similar system.

My point was obviously broader than just the RAAF birds -- this whole episode at least gives some credence to those earlier rumors, i.e., something must have clearly happened. But your take is valid too...

And besides the counter-rotating lift fan and the different nozzles, most of the F135 engine is still the same.

As for “F-35 parts ending up in Hong Kong” that’s obviously a pretty vague way of describing what actually happened. The report specifically mentions a canopy, but you can bet that a good chunk of those other components are going to be engine-related.

And before the inevitable “Chyna copied muh engine” takes start rolling in again, the US would obviously do the exact same thing -- analyze/study and squeeze every bit of technical intelligence out of it -- if it got its hands on an adversary’s hardware.

The irony is that the scoop we're actually discussing shows that this sort of thing is entirely possible; that obviously doesn't prove yet that the F135 rumor is fully true, but it does make your absolute certainty that it's "pure garbage" look pretty damn premature...

I am sick of people making comments without any facts or true knowledge. Using a Twitter post as some claim of evidence is laughable at best. I challenge you to find any credible evidence to back up this BS Twitter claim. As someone in the industry and having particular interest in this area I can assure you that they are utter garbage.

Actually that only shows your bias (as proved elsewhere on the forum, but that's another issue altogether). Besides i doubt you or pretty much anyone in the west really has any idea what the chinese got (or didn't got) F-35 wise. However the near-certain work on an F-135PW-600 like engine as well as iirc some surprisingly similar engine parts, well as a ruomured F-35B equivalent in the works certainly point to to some developments we might not be privy off and likely never will. For all we know they might have smuggled piece by piece an entire F-35 or at least big chunks of it, which is a hilarious thought, but again i doubt anyone on these forums has any way of knowing either way (if ever).

There was a time they though someone had stolen an F100/110 from Hill AFB. Local paper had a comic with the engine strapped to the roof of a car going out the guard gate. Turned out to be a paperwork problem. :rolleyes:

I'm not claiming they got their hands on an entire F135, nor am I saying everything we've ever heard is true. My point is simply that the evidence we have suggests something clearly happened, whatever the actual extent of it...

And if it did turn out to be something more significant than what's been reported, the Pentagon would hardly be eager to come out and admit it. That's all I'm saying...
