After the launch and commissioning of Garibaldi (C551) the Italian Navy started to look about a second (and even bigger) aircraft carrier.
During 1990-94 timeframe, several projects were prepared and introduced to the Stato Maggiore of Italian Navy, one of the most promising was the Design dubbed Project 156.

Project 156 (156A and 160) described a hull long 200 meters, 34 meters of withd, weighting 18,000-20,000 tons, with (850 crews and 150 marines), other caractheristics were the SAAM-it con EMPAR e Aster 15 system, 3 cannons 76/62 as CIWS, SLAT e SCLAR defence systems, with an air group composed by 10/12 AV-8B and 6-8 EH-101. If realized such ship would be commissioned around 2000.

Unfortunately I didn't found better images, but from the ones I have enclosed it is possible to spot a closer resemblance to the SCS/Prince of Asturias/Chakri Neurebet design rather than the Vosper design exploited by the Garibaldi.

Such ship could be regarded as "conjunction ring" between the Garibaldi and the actual Cavour.

This isn't any NUM.
This is a recent (a couple of years) proposal of a CATOBAR derivative of ITS Cavous elaborated by Fincantieri.

Unfortunately not that much than the image you posted.
There was some dicussion about a potential either modification of the existing Cavour into a CATOBAR or a new derived CATOBAR unit but not more than this.
Anyway the head of Italian Navy has recently declared that the next Italian aircraft carrier would be a nuclear propulsed one.

So, in such a vision, is difficult to say if the next aircraft carrier would be a nuclear CATOBAR derivative of the actual Cavour or something new and different (maybe a nuclear CATOBAR derivative of the Trieste).

I'd hope that the Italians went big for their nuclear carrier. 80-100ktons big.

But the trick will be getting the reactors (and steam system) designed for it. At least with a carrier you get a bigger hull to work with than the curse of a 30-40ft diameter pipe for submarine reactors.

The first indications lead to think that the Italian Navy wants to exploit the new Ansaldo small fission reactors already in development for the next Submarine class....

Hmmmm CdG played that game in the name of K15 commonality with the SLBM fleet - and had to accept some compromises... it's difficult to pull out.

If your carrier cannot put 30 knots wind over deck in all conditions, your carrier is underpowered.
