Northrop P-530 / P-600 / P-610 / YF-17 Design Evolution

Here is a Northrop promotional film posted yesterday (23-April-2020) to YouTube by Periscope Film.

The circa-1978 film depicts the YF-17 Cobra's trip to, and demonstration (flown by Test Pilot Hank Chouteau) at, the 1977 Paris Air Show, as well as at NAS Oceana. The high-AoA pass that has been part and parcel of every F/A-18 flight demo I can recall seeing is shown here for good measure.

Of course, by this time the program had moved into another phase at this point, so the aircraft is referred to as the "F-18 Hornet prototype," and the film is entitled "F-18 Hornet Prototype - Odyssey 77."

Interesting that that YC-15 has two different sized engines there at 3:49. Anybody know anything about that?

It is the first example of the CFM-56 to fly; in the number one position. CFM-56 was one of the two "10-tonne" engines proposed for production C-15A/B (the other being the Pratt JT10D).

I have been scanning some old slides and came across some slides of the Yf-17that were being thrown in the trash when the F-18L was cancelled. They show some demonstration weapons loadouts for F-18A development. The earlier ones with the aircraft in silver paint are from 1975 while the camo paint is from March 1976. Here are the 1975 images

Belgian Air Staff specified their preference for the P-530 over the Lockheed Lancer & Mirage F.1 with GD's YF-16 not even in the running in 1973! Quite the reversal.

A US appraisal of the Dutch position. Major takeaways are concerns over J101 high development costs and irritation at French "hard sell tactics":

Makes some sense, dassault was putting tremendous pressure in the fall of 1973 but Belgium had been passably irritated by the Mirage V sale of 1967, plus technically wise the Mirage F1 was already outdated... even with the M53.
I red somewhere the French (Dassault) proposed an Alphajet - F1 - Mercure (SABENA) package, but only the trainer carried the day.

YF-17 and early F/A-18A are both in Mobile AL at the USS Alabama museum.

They are nearly identical in size and shape.
