SUPPLEMENTAL HISTORY OF THE PRELIMINARY AIRPLANE DESIGN BRANCH ENGINEERING DIVISION BUREAU OF AERONAUTICS, NAVY DEPARTMENT 3 FEBRUARY 1945

Design Request D-1. An investigation of changes necessary to convert to a convoy airplane the B-24D, B-25C, B-26-B or A-26-A to desired specifications was requested by the Planning Division 4 Feb. 1942. Studies were made of these airplanes and the results reported 27 March 1942.

Design Request D-2. Weight and performance estimates of an AVG-VOS airplane designed to specifications outlined were requested by the VSO Design Branch 10 Jan. 1942. The results of this study and the results of an investigation of the adaptability of the SBD-2, SBD-3, SB2U-3 and SB2C-1 to be converted to these specifications were included in the report dated 3 April 1942.

Design Request D-3. The practicability of retaining balance in the SB2A in consideration of various armament changes was investigated at the request of the VSB Design Branch 9 Feb. 1942. Results of the investigation were reported 10 Feb. 1942.

Design Request D-4. The range attained by the PBM-3c when towing various types of gliders was requested 17 Feb. 1942 by the VN and Special Design Branch. The report on this study was completed 6 April 1942.

Design Request D-5. An approximate estimation of the practicability of a single seat, 300 m.p.h. fighter seaplane within satisfactory limitations established by the General Board for VSO and VOS airplanes was requested by Experiments and Developments 19 Feb. 1942. Sketches of two airplanes together with their performances and weights were forwarded with the report 14 March 1942.

Design Request D-6. This request for the design of pusher and tractor type airplanes using various engines was submitted by the VF Design Branch 10 Feb. 1942. A number of approximate studies including weight, balance geometry and performance were requested. This request was subsequently cancelled because of the pressure of more urgent work.

Design Request D-7. The design of a catapultable landplane fighter for battleships, to include the study of the limiting maximum weight practicable and the adaptation of existing fighters to such catapulting , was requested 19 Feb. 1942 by the VF Design Branch. The results of this study were recorded 4 April 1942 but not concluded or reported. It was not considered by C in C that such a development program of development was justified.

Design Request D-8. A study of existing aircraft having characteristics probably suitable for development as a night fighter for the Marine Corps was requested by the Director of Planning 25 Feb. 1942. This aircraft was intended to be shore based and used as a night interceptor only. The U.S. Army A-26A and P-61 were suggested as possible types. The report on this request was completed 27 March 1942.

Design Request D-9. A report on the changes necessary to obtain a range of 3000 miles in the B24D with specified bomb loads was requested by the Planning Division 25 Feb. 1942. The results of this study were submitted 27 March 1942.

Design Request D-10. The "Specification for Single Engine Torpedo Bomber Airplane" dated 21 Feb. 1942 was the basis for this design request from the VTB Design Branch dated 21 Feb. 1942. A study of the changes that would be necessary to the TBF airplane to meet these specifications and a new preliminary design layout were reported 6 May 1942.

Design Request D-11. The modifications required in order to catapult the P-40 from AVGp was requested by the Planning Division 9 March 1942. The report on this request was completed 15 April 1942.

Design Request D-12. Unassigned.

Design Request D-13. The designs for two tanker gliders to conform to a brief specification were requested by the VN Special Design Branch 30 March 1942. Designs, calculations and performances were reported June 1942.

Design Request D-14. Studies for the conversion of the XTBU-1, TBF-1 and the TBD-1 to twin float seaplanes to catapult from battleships and a design study of a single-float seaplane fighter with either the R-2600 or the R-2800 engine were requested by Experiments and Developments 1 April 1942. These studies were completed 30 July 1942.

Design Request D-15. The practicability of installing an R-2800-2 stage engine in the F6F-1 was investigated at the request of the Planning Division dated 4 April 1942. Resulting weights, changes and performance were reported 23 April 1942.

Design Request D-16. Alterations to the F4U-1, to convert it to a torpedo plane, were investigated at the request of the VSB Design Branch 4 April 1942. Weight, performance and structural changes were reported 15 May 1942.

Design Request D-17. Small 3-view drawings of fighters for consideration in connection with new design were requested by the VF Design Branch 13 April 1942. Types, included in the arrangements were (a) pusher with the R-3350 engine and (b) tractor with buried R-3350 engine and an extension shaft. This report was completed 23 April 1942.

Design Request D-18. A fighter airplane design utilizing a tractor inverted air cooled engine ( in the fuselage nose) of 750 B.H.P. with auxiliary jet propulsion for high speed was requested by the VF Design Branch 13 April 1942. This design with an additional version using twin pusher propellers and a jet were reported 25 June 1942.

Design Request D-19. A directive of the Assistant Chief requiring a review of weights in the VOS-VSO airplanes with special emphasis on reduced power loading resulted in Plans Division request for a review and restudy of VSO requirements. The VOS-VSO Design Desk submitted a brief specification along these lines and requested a study 25 May 1942. The report on this study was completed 28 May 1942.

Design Request D-20. The weight and characteristics of a single seat VOS airplane to given specifications were requested by the VOS-VSO Design Branch 2 June 1942. A general arrangement drawing (Design No. 239), a weight statement and performance estimates were included in the report 11 June 1942.

Design Request D-21. The approximate weight and dimensions of an amphibian glider, for carrier use, to conform to given specifications was requested by the VN and Special Design Branches 16 June 1942. The report on this project was completed 17 June 1942.

Design Request D-22. This study was undertaken at the request of the Power Plant Design Branch in order to determine the best application for the Westinghouse axial flow type J. P. unit in a fighter airplane. The report was completed 26 Jan. 1943.

Design Request D-23. This request, submitted by the Planning Division, consisted of a study to determine the practicability of installing the MK 7 torpedo on the SBU-1, SBC-3, SBC-4, SB2U-1 and the Lockheed 12-A airplanes. The study was completed 5 March 1942.

Design Request D-24. A glider along the lines indicated by the report for Design Request D-21 was requested by VN and Special Design Branches. The report on this glider which included a 3 view drawing, inboard profile, weights, balance and specifications was completed 3 July 1942.

Design Request D-25. A study to determine the practicability of converting the XF6F-1 and the F4U-1 to seaplanes was requested by the Planning Division. The results of the study were reported 18 July 1942

Design Request D-26. A study to determine the practicability of converting the P-51 and the F4F-3 to seaplanes was requested by the Planning Division 21 July 1942. The results of the study were reported 23 July 1942.

Design Request D-27. The gross weight and performance of a small VF airplane with specified requirements were requested by the Planning Division 2 July 1942. The report on this request was completed 27 July 1942.

Design Request D-28. The performance of an F4F-3 with the R-2600 - 2 speed engine installed was requested by the VF Design Branch 23 July 1942. Estimated weight and structural changes necessary for this alteration were included in the report dated 4 August 1944.

Design Request D-29. The effect on weight, balance, performance and strength of the SB2C-1 incident to the replacement of the R-2600-8 engine or the R-2800 single stage two speed engine was requested by the VSB Design Branch 25 July 1942. The report on this study was completed 4 August 1942.

Design Request D-30. The arrangement and characteristics of a representative two place carrier torpedo scout bomber design conforming to given specifications were requested by the VTB Design Branch 1 August 1942. The report including a general arrangement drawing, weights and performance was completed 29 Oct. 1942.

Design Request D-31. Means for retracting the nose wheel of a tricycle landing gear in a VTB or VSB class airplane to allow for centerline mounting of a torpedo or bomb without interference was investigated at the request of the Experiments and Developments Branch 12 August 1942. No report was made officially on this request since the investigation did not indicate a promising solution and was therefore cancelled.

Design Request D-32. The practicability of installing floats on the SBD, P-38 and P-51 airplanes was investigated 18 August 1942 at the request of the Planning Division. The report on this request was completed 21 August 1942.

Design Request D-33. The design of a twin engine long range torpedo plane to given specifications was requested by the Experiments and Developments Branch 26 August 1942, at a low priority; but was subsequently cancelled by the originating branch because of more urgent work.

Design Request D-34. The design of a fighter with one synchronized 20 mm cannon was requested by the Experiments and Developments Branch 26 August 1942. A general arrangement of Design No. 257 and a weight statement were prepared but a report was not preposed due to notice of cancellation of the project.

Design Request D-35. Unassigned.

Design Request D-36. The development of a design of a single seat fighter to Navy Specifications using a Merlin 61 engine in order to determine performance comparison with that of a similar land based type using the same engine was requested by the Experiments and Developments Branch 27 October 1942. Design No. 250 with weights and performance was compared with the U. S. Army P-51B in the report submitted 18 May 1943.

Design Request D-37. A study of a fighter designed to the requirements outlined was requested by the VP Design Branch 8 Jan. 1943. The report on this request was completed 24 June 1943 and included a general arrangement drawing of Design No. 254.

Design Request D-38. A design study of a single engine single seat fighter to given specifications and requirements was requested by the VF Design Branch 8 Jan. 1943. The report on this request was completed 30 Sept. 1943.

Design Request D-39. The design of a radio controlled tailless drone was requested by the VN and Special Design Branch 13 Jan. 1943. The results of the development of this request including drawings of Designs Nos. 252 and 252A were reported 20 March 1943.

Design Request D-40. The design of a twin engine inshore patrol airplane using two Ranger 750 H.P. engines to determine its practicability was requested by the Experiments and Developments Branch 16 Feb. 1943. The results of the study including a general arrangement of Design No. 249 which represented the study was completed 19 May 1943.

Design Request D-41. A rough design of a single seat fighter using the Ranger 750 H.P. engine was requested to determine the practicability of using this engine. The request was made by the Experiments and Developments Branch 16 Feb. 1943 and the report in reply to the request was completed 9 April 1943.

Design Request D-42. The report on a verbal request originated by the Head of the Experiments and Development Branch was completed 12 March 1943. Design No. 244 with weight and performance calculations were included in the report on this request.

Design Request D-43- The characteristics of an "Aerial Ram" plane powered with a single Westinghouse jet turbine was requested by the VN and Special Design Branch 11 March 1943. The results of this study were completed 29 May 1943.

Design Request D-44. This request was for the design of a large VPB landplane and was initiated by VPB Design Branch 15 March 1943. Report was made 24 April 1943.

Design Request D-45. A design study of a flying wing single seater fighter with the pilot in a prone position was requested by the VF Design Branch 15 March 1943. No official report was made on this request since it was subsequently cancelled.

Design Request D-46. The weight and general characteristics of a single seat VSO airplane to given specifications and a plot of V max and rate of climb against altitude curves were requested by the VOS-VSO Design Branch 15 March 1943. The report was completed 4 May 1943.

Design Request D-47. A study to determine the possibility of using one 1600# armor-piercing bomb as armament for the XBDR-1 drone was requested by the Head of Special Design Branch 4 Jan. 1944. The report in reply to this request was completed 26 Jan. 1944.

Design Request D-48. A brief study of a single place dive bomber powered with an 1820-56 engine and a J.P. motor was requested by the VSB Design Branch 16 April 1943. A report of the design, weight and performance of this study was completed 24 June 1943.

Design Request D-49. The weight, general characteristics and plotted performance of the V max and rate of climb for a single seat VSO cruiser based seaplane was requested 13 May 1943 by the VOS-VSO Design Branch. A general arrangement drawing, performance curves and weight statement were completed for the report dated 24 June 1943.

Design Request D-50. The arrangement and probable performance of a dive bomber with an R-4360 engine was requested by the Experiments and Developments Branch 1 May 1943 - Several studies were made and reported informally but results were not considered of significant interest so that formal report was not made.

Design Request D-51. A study of the SB2D-1 airplane to determine what could be done to improve performance was received from the VSB Design Branch 21 May 1943. The results were reported on 8 September 1943.

Design Request D-52. The characteristics and performance of a single seat, single purpose dive bomber to outlined specifications was requested 11 August 1943 by the Plans Division. The report was completed 8 Oct. 1943.

Design Request D-53. The performance, weight and balance of the SB2A-3 incorporating various changes in the engine, fuel system and armament was requested by the VSB Design Branch 15 July 1943. The report on this study was completed 3 Dec. 1943.

Design Request D-54. This was a research study undertaken by the branch involving a design study of the possible service application of the 4000 H.P. Westinghouse gas turbine with a counter rotating shrouded propeller. The results were not promising.

Design Request D-55. The results of a design study of a ram jet propelled drone were completed 26 Jan. 1944 and submitted to the Special Design Branch. This was initiated by verbal request.

Design Request D-56. The results of a study initiated by the Special Design Branch, 11 August 1944, to determine whether gargoyle may be carried on the F4U were reported to the Special Design Branch 28 August 1944.

Design Request D-57. An investigation as to the number of MK 69 bombs that could be carried on the PB4Y—1 was requested by the Special Design Branch, 25 Sept. 1944. The report on this investigation was completed 2 Oct. 1944.

Design Request D-58. The general conformation of a new primary trainer in accordance with VN Design Branch Memo. Aer-E-15-FTW dated 12 October 1944 was requested by the VN Design Branch 12 Oct. 1944. The report on this request was completed 7 December 1944.

Design Request D-59. The design of a practicable rocket-propelled guided missile for use against ships was requested by the Special Design Branch 8 October 1943 and a supplementary request for further development by the same branch 26 Oct. 1943. The report on this request was completed 2 Nov. 1943.

Design Request D-60. The performance of a fighter airplane with an R-2800 two speed water injection engine and a W2B37 unit was requested, by the VF Design Branch 21 October 1943. The general arrangements of Design Nos. 267 and. 267A, a weight estimation and the performance were included in the report dated. 12 June 1944.

Design Request D-61. The performance of a fighter powered by an R-4360 two speed water injection engine and a I-40 jet was requested by the VF Design Branch 21 Oct. 1943. The general arrangement of Design No.269 was included in this report completed 12 June 1944.

Design Request D-62. A request that the PAD Branch investigate, from the design standpoint, the feasibility of suspending bombs under wings of an airplane by means of internal shackles suspended from the wing structure was initiated by Armament Memo. Aer-E-3243-JBM, F41-7. The report on this request was completed 1 April 1944.

Design Request D-63. The performance to be expected of a single seat fighter designed for shore base operation and powered by an R-2800 two stage water injection engine was requested 28 Sept. 1943 by the Experiments and Developments Branch. This report including Design Nos. 262, 264, and 268 was completed 3 October 1944.

Design Request D-64. A study to convert the F6F to a dive bomber with a minimum amount of redesign was requested by the VSB Design Branch 15 Nov. 1943. The report covering this redesign study was completed 15 Nov. 1943.

Design Request D-65. A study of the application of the MK 4 glider to operational aircraft was requested by OP31-2-SH1 on 25 Feb. 1944, and a report submitted to the Special Design Branch on 23 March 1944. (Secret)

Design Request D-66. The practicability of mounting two MK III Bat Guided Missiles on the PBY-5 was requested by the Special Design Branch 13 April 1944. A report on the results of this study was completed 29 April 1944.

Design Request D-67. The practicability of mounting one or more Azon type bombs on a TBM and SB2C type airplane was requested by the Special Design Branch 23 April 1944. The report on this study was completed 20 May 1944.

Design Request D-68. A study to determine the relative size, weight and performance of air cooled and liquid cooled engine powered Shipboard fighters was requested by the Design Coordination Branch 23 May 1944. A report based on this request, using the R-2800 and the Merlin 14 SM engines was completed 26 Aug. 1944.

Design Request D-69. A request received from the Special Design Branch to determine the practicability of installing Pelican type bombs MKS 55. 56 and 57 in carrier based service type airplanes was prepared 8 July 1944 for the Special Design Branch. (Secret)

Design Request D-70. A request for a study of the feasibility of mounting Army Flying Bomb JB-2 pick-a-back on the PB4Y-1 airplane was received 1 November 1944. Report of the results of the study was made under date of 4 December 1944.
