Hi,
The "Aircraft 26" or "VM-26" -- "VM" for "Vladimir Myasishchev", of course -- was essentially an M-4 "Bison-A" with twin Dobrynin VD-5 turbojets instead of four AM-3A turbojets. Each VD-5 had a maximum thrust of 127.5 kN (13,000 kgp / 28,660 lbf) thrust. The VM-26 would have also had provision for two big rocket-assisted takeoff (RATO) boosters to help it get off the runway in heavily loaded condition.
An even more drastic variation on the basic "Bison" design was the "Aircraft 28" or "VM-28", which was considered in parallel with early M-4 development. The relatively small wing area of the "Bison" limited its altitude ceiling, which not only made it more vulnerable to interception but also reduced its cruise efficiency. The VM-28 featured a bigger with and four Dobrynin VD-5 turbojets, with an engine arrangement along the lines of the Boeing B-47 -- one engine on a pylon inboard on each wing, a second tacked on outboard under each wing, with the bicycle landing gear stowed in the bottom of the outboard engine nacelle. The VM-28 actually got as far as a full-scale mockup, but development of the M-4 seemed to be promising enough and the VM-28 got the axe in 1955.

Wow regrettably I missed this post!
Up until now I never knew of this high-altitude variant development of the Bison.

Would it be safe enough to say that the Myasishchev bureau would have been better off sticking with this design, as opposed to the actual VM-26 design which would become the disappointing M-4 Bison?

There must be more pics of the VM-28 mockup out there!! Would be very interested to see them ;)

Not a different photo but a slightly larger version.

Also I have this information:
Along with the construction of M-4, the OKB designed the BM-28 high-altitude strategic bomber (or 2M) with a service ceiling of 17,300 m and a maximum flight speed of 940 kms/hour. Working drawings of the aircraft were transferred to the plant.

In 1954 Myasishchev proceeded to develop the article "36" airplane, which subsequently received the designation 3M. The tactical and technical assignment included airframe weight reduction, increase range and decrease of of takeoff run length.

The 3M was originally intended as a prototype using the VM-28 configuration, but in this case there was some technical risk, since the location of the engines on underwing pylons had not yet been sufficiently studied.

Work on further high-rise bomber (DVB) were required on 29 (19?) March 1952 by CM Resolution № 1049-542. Testing of the aircraft was ordered to begin in May 1954, late deliveries of aircraft on the state tests has been postponed to June 1955.
During the design phase, several options for engine placement were considered: All the engines in the wing, two engines in the wing and two on underwing pylons, or all the engines on underwing pylons.
Full-size mock-up aircraft was presented to the commission on Dec. 1, 1952. The latest update of the project was produced in the autumn of 1953.
In addition to carrying bombs, the aircraft could carry AMD-2M naval mines, "Desna", A-2, or high-altitude 45-36AV torpedoes.
Work on the plane was halted by a CM Decree of 16 October 1954 and OKB-23 was asked to focus on modernization of the M-4 supersonic bomber design instead.

Hi! Myasishchev M-28 the third configulation and the last configulation. "V" prefix was dropped when M-26 was planned.

Perhaps this is the second configulation.

The first configulation had one engine in each wing root and another in an underwing pod half way along the inner wing.

THis picture shows full scale mock up of the M-28 last configulation. Please take care for outer engine pod position.

From Kryl'ya Rodine 11/2020;

In 1951-52. in the OKB V.M. Myasishchev, in accordance with the Air Force assignment, work was underway on the 26 airborne assault aircraft, which was supposed to be executed according to the high-wing layout and equip with two theaters with a capacity of 6250 eh.h. each. Besides,
the car was to be equipped, in addition to a tricycle chassis, and an additional multi-wheeled bogie. The aircraft was supposed to carry cargo weighing up to 5 tons and have a flight range of up to 3000 km. The vehicle for the implementation of PRR and airborne landing was supposed to be equipped with a cargo ramp.

In 1953, on an initiative basis, the project of the transport aircraft "27" was developed, which was supposed to be carried out according to the low-wing scheme, equipped with a large tail hatch, closing a ramp, and equipped with two turbojet engines with a thrust of 4500 kgf each. According to calculations, this MTC was supposed to have a MVM of 45 tons, an amphibious load of 8 tons and be capable of transporting 40 paratroopers, or 64 soldiers with personal weapons, or 35 wounded stretchers. Flight range with a load of 5 tons - 3300 km.

In 1960, the design bureau V.M. Myasishchev was working
according to the project of the transport-assault aircraft "26" (the second with this designation), which was supposed to be used mainly for the transportation of ballistic missiles. The car was planned to be performed according to the high-wing scheme and equipped with four turbojet engines with thrust 11000-12500 kgf each. In the cargo compartment the size
4.0x4.0x32.0 m was supposed to accommodate up to 250 soldiers - in the variant of personnel transportation. The aircraft's MVM was estimated at 145 tons. The flight range with a cargo of 40 tons was expected to be within 3500 km.
