Shenyang FC-31 prototype to J-XY / J-35 naval fighter

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

The more standard story of the origin of the WS-13 is the Chinese needed an domestically made engine to replace Russian RD-33s in those JF-17 they plan to sell to countries Russia is not friendly with.

Interesting drag chutes are interesting.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

I think he is referring to earlier speculation that it might be intended to become a carrier aircraft. Having drag chutes is not entirely at odds with this possibility (they could be solely for testing, or naval service only planned for the more distant future), but certainly makes it seem more remote, at least for the time being. That, and the single-piece flaperons.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Drag chutes on the land based variant has no bearing whatsoever the basic design's potential to be navalized. Both mig-29 and Su-27 have naval, carrier based variants. Both also have land based vaiants with drag chutes.

The presence of drag chutes and single piece flaps indicates the first variant isn't navalized. But that's no surprise since PLA AF is by far the senior aviation service of the chinese military compared to the navy's as yet nonexistent operational fleet air arm. They would hardly design a fighter for the pipsqueak navy first and make the far more established Air Force adapt, than the other way around. It seem plausible the PLAAF procurement of this plane could run into the thousands, while any PLAN procurement of carrier adapted version would be numbered in the dozens, or at most, low hundreds.

If and when this jet reach service, it would be interesting to see if the Chinese will use it to replace all G3 and G4 tactical aircraft in their service, like the US would do with F-35, Or if unlike the US, They would consider any aircraft with stealth baggage to be a specialized niche product, and continue to develope nonstealthy tactical aircraft.

I think it's said that it's WS-12 and not for J-31

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

I thought WS-12 was an highly evolved version of Rolls Royce Spey that was cancelled?

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

If they are real or at least 1:1 engines then it is a relatively small engine.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

let's wait for official booklets and stand plackards

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Shenyang Aircraft Corporation is a subsidiary of China Aviation Industrial Corporation (AVIC), hence the name AVIC and logo on the model.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Is the side hatch for the main gear or an weapon bay?

Main gear; see the earlier pics of it's underbelly.

I have to say though, assuming that model is accurate, that's a very large weapons bay in proportion to the rest of the aircraft.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Did you notice that the ejection seat in the model strongly resembles the Russian K-36? The J-20 clearly has a different type of bang seat.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Appears that the Shenyan J-31 model was replaced at the AVIC display.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Are we looking into the inside and an open side weapon bay right in front of the red main landing gear bay doors?

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

IMO there is no weapons bay ... it's too short for that ! I think this is simply some kind of avionics/equipment.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

I think it will be interesting to see if the PRC come out with a two-seat version of this J-21/J-31 design - unlike that of the F-35! RegardsPioneer

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

I am more intrigued bo the bottom of the model show in the link above. The weapon bay seem to contain 3 sections, with the one in the middle having very large number of segments to its door. What the hell? What is the benefit for being able to open that door in segments?

Also, ithe commentator in the link seems to have overlooked the fact the model's nose gear has a catapult towbar. Thast seems to be much stronger evidence that the model is meant to depict a carrier based fighter than the mere fact that there are naval missiles hanging under its wings.

Still, I need to see evidence that J-21 is actually much more than essentially a stealthified version of Mig-29K.

Note, your link had two different models. The one from the video screencap is not the same as the one in the other two images. The first one has a frameless canopy and no catapult tow bar. I'd only trust the screencap model to be an accurate reference for the J-31. While anti-ship missiles tell us that it could have a naval strike role, I don't know if that necessarily conclude that it will be carrier borne.

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Ohhh please ... these are models, simply toys made by a company that want's to earn money !

The models itself was reportedly based on Ga Shan's CG ans as such is not really an "simi-official" leak by SAC.

As such please don't take each and every detail for granted ...

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Reportedly the prototype made two flights during the last few days ... one of them today !

Re: Shenyang J-21 / J-31 revealed!

Yeah , i think the second flight was rumored to happen about a week ago , so that must be the third. Hope for more pics of the bird , hopefully with gear up too. :)
