Here are two fictitious side profiles of the Northrop Grumman N-251 supersonic V/STOL demonstration aircraft, meant to resemble what it would look like if it made it to production and service of the USAF.

Like the X-14, the DuPont DP-1, The Bell Seakat and others, the N-251 needs to have the thrust-vectoring exhaust louvers exactly at the CG for VTOL. The simplest and most efficient way to do this is to place the entire engines forward of those louvers, which dictates the aircraft's unusual appearance. Attached photo shows the underside of the airplane.
