Mitsubishi Shusui and Shusui-kai

Robin,

There was an old thread I started about the Yokusuka/Hiro H7Y1 12-Shi "Tillie" flying boat project. It was to be an extreme long range aircraft based off of Junkers diesel technology. No images exist of the project so we don't know just how much German tech was used in the prototype.

You can read the thread here:
http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8372.0

Many thanks Robin-san and windswords-san. :D

@Blackkite, thanks for the video, very interesting.
@Windswords, I'd forgotten about that thread, not only does it answer the question I asked, but I posted in it too!... :-[

cheers,
Robin.

Jumo 205 had a roots blower for super charging and Mitsubishi D4A1 had mechanical centrifugal super charger and turbo charger.
Supercharging is very important for two cycle diesel engine exhaust. (forced exhaust by supercharging.)

Is D4A1 engine had some relation for Mitsubishi ME2A H-24 2500hp liquid cooling engine?
ME2A was planned to use Taizan bomber.
Also ME2A was a base of 5000hp Nu engine(ME3A) for Kawanishi K-60 flying boat and Kugisho 17-shi land base recon Gyoun(R1Y1).
ME means Mitsubishi Ekirei(液冷). 液冷 means liquid cooling. NK means Nakajima Kurei(空冷). 空冷 means air cooling.
For example, Nakajima Homare engine was NK9.

You can see the steam bottom aft of the Shusui.
This steam was discharged from steam turbine drive rocket fuel turbine pump.

蒸気排出口 : steam outlet nozzle
蒸気タービン : steam turbine
The last picture is from "Rocket Fighter Shusui" , dainippon kaiga, by Shigeru Shibata, 31/8/2005, ISBN4-499-22889-1
You can see many English explanation in this book. Very good book for far east and western people. ;D
You can see the steam in this picture, too.
And Youtube.

This aircraft, the Ki-202 was to have been the definitive Army version of the fighter. To further save fuel, the aircraft was to have been launched by catapult.
http://cricket.www.physicsdaily.com/physics/Mitsubishi_Ki-202
Two Navy versions of the Shusui were planned, the J8M1 armed with two 30-mm cannon and the J8M2 with one of the cannon being replaced by additional fuel tanks. An enlarged version of the Ki-200 Army version with increased fuel, the Ki-202, was to be the Army's priority interceptor project.

In-flight ignition would have been tricky.
Please show me why in-flight ignition would have been tricky.
I think it was better to dump the oxidizer immediately when engine stalled.

23 Since the technical data about Me163 which the technical lieutenant colonel “Iwaya” brought Japan from Germany were too much scarce, there were some utterances which were doubtful of domestic production from the Kugisho persons concerned.
“Wada”, head of the Kugisho pressed down the utterance and opted for development of "Shusui."
Since technical data were insufficient, Mitsubishi showed unwillingness to the order of the Shusui design, but “Wada” demanded to "Koshino" (member of the science part of Kugisho) to compensate shortage of technical data, and the "Koshino" took over it.
Thereby, Mitsubishi received reluctantly the order of development of "Shusui" of the severe schedule.
The code of the Japanese army and navy were altogether decoded by the United States.
Even when the Coral Sea naval battle and the Midway naval battle......
Submarine I 29 received the ambush attack of the U.S. submarine.
During her seventh war patrol, Sawfish joined Rock (SS-274) and Tilefish (SS-307) for wolfpack operations. The submarines sortied from Majuro on 22 June and headed for the Philippines. On 18 July, she damaged a tanker and, on 26 July, fired a spread of four torpedoes at surfaced Japanese submarine,I-29, which exploded and sank.
Captain Takakazu Kinashi of I-29 submarine telegraphed their return sailing schedule by secret code to the Naval Genaral Staff.
Addition :
A spread of six Type 95 torpedoes were fired at carrier Wasp at about 14:44 15/9/1942 from the tubes of the B1 Type Japanese submarine I-19 , which captain was Takakazu Kinashi. Wasp sank.
Three hit the WASP among six discharged torpedoes.
One torpedo hit battleship North Carolina which was cruising 10-km beyond, and it carried out North Carolina serious damage.
Repair took six months.
Moreover, one torpedo hit destroyer O'Brien and O'Brien sank one month afterward.

It is a testament to the engineering prowess of the Japanese to get so far in the development of the J8M1 despite the lack of technical data. The same could be said for the engineers who worked on the NE-30 turbojet. they did not have much information to go on as well.

Many thanks windswords-san.
Shusui's engine had a almost same shape of recent rocket engine.
FIN. :D

Is there much information on the J8M2?

Seems like its not really mentioned that often.

Hi!
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%A7%8B%E6%B0%B4

"J8M2 海軍の計画。発進用車輪を廃してカタパルト発進式とし、搭載武装を30ミリ機銃1挺に減じ、燃料搭載量を増加させた型。計画のみ。"

"J8M2 was the IJN's Plan. It was a catapult launch type to abolish the starting wheel, reduced to only one 30mm cannon, increased fuel load. Plan only."

Unfortunately I can't find any information except wikipedia. ;D

A couple of images from a stress analysis of the J8. The document doesn't call the aircraft anything other than 'J8'.
