Mitsubishi Ki-83 and it's variant

Hi blackie,
nice Ki-83 renderings, but this airplane was actually built. The one who deserves a place in your forum is the original design, with that massive Mitsubishi double engine, which was not pursued.

Hi :)

Blackkite and Justo, you are great! THANKS.

Karsten

Although to me it is not really a project, I guess the Ki-83 remained experimental so it can stay in this section...

Now since it is one of my all-time favorite aircraft, allow me to add my own modest contribution to the above (last one is a PDF file).

Very nice contributions guys.

So what were the major differences between the Ki-83 and Ki-103 and Ki-95?
The Ki-95 was a reconnaissance plane. Was it fitted with weapons?

The Ki-73?

At first Ki-95 reconnaissance plane was called Ki-83 Otsu, then called Ki-95 from June 1943.
Ki-95's specification were as follows.
Engine, Propeller and Dimension were same as Ki-83, Empty weight : 5750kg, Gross weight : 8500kg, Wing loading : 253.4kg/m2, Power loading : 2.47kg/hp, Maximum speed : 704.5km/h(9000m), Time to climb to 10000m : 10minutes, Service ceiling : 12660m, Range with drop tanks : 3500km(7.5hr), Armaments : 20mm cannon×2, Number of crews : 2

Ki-103 was planned as the attack plane which applied some modification to Ki-83, never completed.
The target for Ki-103 were airplanes which located on the base and tanks.
The armament of Ki-103 were 1 or 2×30~40mm cannons, 2×20mm cannons and 100kg bombs.
Combat radius : 1000km(with 1hr).

Ki-83's turbo chargers were located inboard side of the engine nacelle and covered by inter cooler outlet nozzle, we do not see them in pictures or drawings of Ki-83.
We only see air inlet nozzle to turbo charger.
No.1 aircraft(marked 762km/h by American pilot) to No.2 aircraft(fell down by cockpit wind shield break accident) : with turbo charger and inter cooler
No.3 to N0,4 aircrafts(destroyed by B-29 bombing) : no turbo charger
N0.5(not completed) and later aircrafts were planed to have turbo charger and alcohol injection system instead of inter cooler.
The IJA ordered 39 aircrafts when the end of the war.

where do you fine this plan blackkite ?
Hi! Sorry for delay.
I found Ki-83 drawings in "JAPANESE ARMY & NAVY EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT,DESIGN WITH PRECISION, drawing by Matsuba Minoru, Aireview magazine special edition". There is no ISBN number in this book. I think it's little hard to get this book for foreign people.
Anyone knows how to get this book?

Or please mail following address

This is an excellent book for detail drawings. I got mine from Hobby Link Japan some years ago. ;D

Really, it was a very interesting aircraft. I chose it to make an interesting -hypotetical- version; tested by the USAAF as the original......

Fran

Very beautiful and impressive model! This shape has the possibility to realize higher speed by low drag.
Please take care for propeller diameter to keep ground clearance in take off and landing (high angle of attack), and weight increase by extended propeller shaft, long engine nacelle and forced cooling fan.

Hi! 3-side view.
Please order next chance. ;)

It's this Ki-83? http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=143492365809444&set=a.110538772438137.20281.110534692438545&type=1&relevant_count=1

Blackkite,

Do you know what the purpose of the second crewman was? Navigator? Observer? If anybody else knows for sure, please say so.

Would all the Ki-83 aircraft have had a second crewman or just a few? Squadron leaders maybe?

Thanks
