Yes. It's a form of ejector ramjet... a ramjet that can work at Mach 0 because of the ejector effect of the rockets. About 10 years ago i built one - granted, a small, crappy one - under contract to NASA.

A photo was on the home page of your site, or I remember wrong ?

You remember correctly. Our ejector ramjet was a cheap piece of junk compared to an "X-Plane," but it was done on a pittance of a budget. Pity the whole project fell apart right before first flight...

Didn't the GNOM soviet ICBM used this system ? (well at least the small subscale demonstrator which flew, think it was the PR-90)

Yup. Technically the SA-6 and Meteor missiles use a similar principle AFAIK, usually called ducted rocket.

I have to research by files but I believe I have some relevent reports on the research. I also found these:

A Ranger lunar probe press release?
Uhm... Ya... Err... I'm surprised,.. YES! Surprised that you didn't know that about the Ranger OBB! Indeed...

Eh, forget it... I couldn't actually pull up the link, (for some reason after 9am my-local-time NRTS goes "down" somehow and I can't pull up anything) when "I" checked it this morning it actually linked to a "Tiros" press briefing so the link is SERIOUSLY screwed up.
Sorry folks...

I did a search on NTRS this morning and got no results from "RENE" (ok, actually I got a LOT of reports authored by anyone with the letters R-E-N-E anywhere in their name but that's not the point :) ) one "historical" report for "RENE Ejector Rocket" nothing for "Air Augmented Rocket" and about three dozen pages of results for "Ejector Rocket Engine" which I'm still going through.

I was/am hoping to re-find an overview and final testing presentation/report on the RENE program itself that I have a copy of at home. Unfortunatly I don't have the cover page or report number and no actual idea where I got the damn thing from.
::::sigh:::: so much for me being helpful.

If you get Scott's Astrorocket report, here:
http://www.up-ship.com/drawndoc/drawndocspaceother.htm,

it has some good info on RENE.

I actually think I have that one... Or at least I've purchase it. I've had some downloading issues with several articles recently so I'll have to check. Thanks.

Here by the way are a few more report links I've found:
"OPERATIONALLY EFFICIENT PROPULSION SYSTEM STUDY(OEPSS) DATA BOOK"
"Volume X: Air Augmented Rocket Afterburning"

"EJECTORS AND THRUST AUGMENTATION"

Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up MB, I actually DO have that article! I'll get a good read on it.
(And I have to go back and rename all those damn files. I never got around to labeling them after I bought them so I pretty much have to go through and open each pdf to figure out what it is :) )

Randy

Let he who has always renamed each and every PDF file on his computer cast the first stone... ;D

Forgive my ignorance (again!), but was there any connection with the ejector ramjet built by Space Access LLC? (video link in http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10241.msg95995.html#msg95995)
As an FYI the Space Access ERJ patent number is #6,786,040 B2 and the patent number of their vehicle is 6,193,187 B1 (Available from your favorite patent look-up-link :) ) Now a rather 'strange' thing I recall seeing while browsing patents one time was at LEAST two other launch concepts that used the same "aerospaceplane" configuration (and IIRC the same submitters but not granted to Space Access) with different launch styles.
One was "air-launched" from an "under-wing" position (WTF???) from a C-5, the other was "towed" to altitude by a C-5 and then had FIGHTERS attach themselves to the cable and EVERYBODY goes into a tight circle to "fling" the orbiter as a boost!
(Ok, somehow I don't think I want to ride on that one... Or have them flying over my head :) )

Now, there are inflatable heat shields being looked at-perhaps a RENE nozzle could also be an inflate-and double as a float for water recovery.
