It was a GE-own design. AW (then w/out Space Technology) run an extensive article with a number of different design illustrated. I have the photocopy, just have to find it and post.. ;)

Hi Skybolt!

In what number of magazine(Aviation Week) was this project?
In what to page?

Nugo, I'm not able to find the damn photocopy... I'd assume very late '50s very early '60s.

The most probable candidate for the airplane in the Aviation Week article would be the Republic AP-100, given that the AP-100 used three lift fans and was powered by General Electric J85s, while capable of Mach 2 and featuring a delta wing design. The timeframe in which the AP-100 was designed (1959/1960) also appears to match the timeframe in which the issue is published.

More info on the AP-100 is found in Tony Buttler's book American Secret Projects: Fighters & Interceptors 1945-1978. The design of the AP-100 with respect to the type of VTOL propulsion system used shows that by the late 1950s, the lift jet/vectored thrust was seen as a more efficient means of VTOL for jet fighters because it eliminated the drawbacks of the tailsitter concept.

It has nothing to do with Republic AP-100 being just another AvLeak artist Herb own design.
