Hi hesham,
I guess it's only a first installment of a long list... filling the many gaps I have (my highest nr. is 612)

I have also some naval missiles:
Laté.232/233 MALAFON (MArine LAtécoère contre le FONd) - antisubmarine missile
Laté.258/259 MALAFACE (MArine LAtécoère contre surFACE) - antiship missile (with some land-attack capabilities in the later model)

??? ... Lorriane or Lorraine ?

It's "Lorraine" .. ;)
Ok Hesham, I'll post the types from Cunys Latécoère book, but, as it's quite a lot,
it probably will take two or three days.

The highest type number I've found is 882 ... ;)

Thank you my dears Jemiba and Sandy22,

My dear Jemiba,

Well done my dear, and I will try to get informations about
old aircraft Late-285 and Late-289.

About Masalca missiles:
surfing on http://xplanes.free.fr/stato/stato-10.html I've found reference to MS.10 and MS.12/14/15 Masalca designed by Max Salmon (since, I guess, the prefix MS).
The MS.10 was jointly developed with Matra. All the missiles in the MS. series I've found were ram-jet powered, so Matra-Statoreacteur could be another guess for the non-Late prefix.

Hi,

Latecoere old aircraft:
Late-285 was developed from 284 as stretch version and powered by
650 hp HS 12Nbr engine.

Late-289 was three seat landplane bomber,a version of 283.

Yes, but there was a very special Laté 299, the Laté 299A prototype with two Hispano-Suiza engines :) :

http://www.airwar.ru/enc/spyww2/late299.html

"Loaned" to Arsenal to test the tandem engines configuration of the forthcoming (and shortcomings ::) ;D) VB-10. Destroyed before its first flight by an allied bombing in 1943...

From my dear Jemiba,

The Latecoere-480 drawing.

MS 10 was the only Max Salmon missile built by Matra. It used a square-shaped ramjet.
The other ones in the series were built by Latecoere and used a 500 mm diameter ramjet.
MS 11 an MS 12 had delta wings; MS 11 with four wrap-around boosters and MS 12 with a single axial booster.
MS 14 was an improvement of MS 12 with a recoverable part.
MS 15 was a totally new vehicle with trapezoidal wings.

MS 20 and MS 21 were solid rocket powered mockups intended to test homing devices.

I've been rationalizing my Latécoère lists -- hope this is of use...

The Aviation Firms of Pierre-Georges Latécoère

Wartime Aircraft Production

In 1917 P-G Latécoère turns from making munitions to licence-building aircraft for the Aviation Militaire Française. Total wartime production amounted to 800 licenced Breguet XIV and Salmson 2A.2 2-seat reconaissance bomber biplanes.

Initially, these licenced airframes do not seem to have received Latécoère designations. The licenced XIVs were refered to as Breguet-Latécoère 14s (or sometimes Latécoère Breguets). The designation Laté 1 may have been applied to licenced Brequets but there is some confusion with a 1918 2-seat fighter (of original Latécoère design?).

Postwar Civilian Conversions

Latécoère converted large number of Breguet XIVs for civilian used in 1921-23 (190 for use by Aéropostale alone). None of these civil conversions seem to have received distinct Laté-x designations. Namings were as follows:

- Breguet-Latécoère 14.A2: straightforward de-militarized mailplane conv., 1922
- Breguet-Latécoère 14 Torpedo: passenger conv. for Aéropostale, 1922-23 *
- Breguet-Latécoère 14.B2: (970) Latécoère inflight refueling experiments, 1922

(* The 'Torpedo' name comes from the designation of Breguet's own 14T and 14Tbis passenger conversions. Like the 14Ts, the Breguet-Latécoère 14 Torpedo was an aft cabin conversion as distinct from the forward cabin 14 'Salon' conversions.)

Unlike the Breguet XIV, the licenced Salmson 2A.2 recce biplanes most certainly did receive a Latécoère designation - Laté 2. Coincidentally or otherwise, that number matched the Salmson company's designation - SAL 2 (2A.2 was an Aviation Militaire designator).**

(** NB: SAL seems to spring from the first three letters of Salmson's name -- the actual corporate names were Emile Salmson & Cie and the Société des Moteurs Salmson.)

Latécoère Airlines and Aviation Divisions

The Compagnie Latécoère had numerous aviation related divisions located around Toulouse including: the Lignes Aeriennes Latécoère and CGEA (Cie Generale d’Entreprises Aeronautiques). The Lignes Aeriennes Latécoère may explain why earlier designations are often shown as LAT-xx rather than Laté-xx (as well as the SILAT acronym, see below).

- 1918: Société des lignes Latécoère or Lignes Aeriennes Latécoère (LAT)

- 1918: Compagnie Espagne Maroc Algerie (CEMA) P-G Latécoère & Beppo de Massimi

- 1919: CEMA renamed Lignes Aériennes Latécoère (LAT)

- 1921: LAT renamed Compagnie Générale d'Entreprises Aéronautiques (CGEA)

- 1927: Marcel Latécoère sells CGEA majority shares to Marcel Bouilloux-Lafont

- 1927: Marcel Bouilloux-Lafont founds Compagnie Générale Aéropostale (CGA)
-- NB: Aéropostale assoc. with Latécoère but not owned by Compagnie Latécoère

- March 1931: Compagnie Générale Aéropostale declared bankrupt

- 1932: Aéropostale dissolved by French government and merged with SCELA
-- SCELA: Société Centrale pour l'Exploitation de Lignes Aériennes

- Aug 1933: Aéropostale officially merged with SCELA to become Air France

Latécoère Aircraft Manufacturing

As mentioned, in 1917, the Latécoère works turned from munitions making to the licensed production of those Breguet and Salmson 2-seat reconnaissance aircraft. The corporate identity went through three major changes between 1917 and the beginning of WWII.

- 1917: Forges et Ateliers de Construction Latécoère building aircraft

- 1922: name changed to Société Industrielle d’Aviation Latécoère (SIDAL)
-- Acronym later SILAT for clipped-form Société Industrielle LATécoère

- End 1936: Latécoère nationalized (to be combined with Dewoitine as SCNAM)

- 1937: Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Midi (SCNAM)

Ignoring LAT/Laté vagaries, Latécoère type numbers are seen separated from their prefix by a space, period, or hyphen. Subtype numbers are then separated from the main designation by a space, period, hyphen, slash, or nothing at all.

I've chosen to present Latécoère designation with a space between Laté and type number; and a hyphen between type number and sub-type. So, instead of Laté.29/3, I'll use Laté 29-3 for continuity and, I hope, clarity.

[2] NB: It's difficult to pin down exact Laté 28 variant numbers. In part, this is because of individual airframes being modified between variants. In other cases there is c/n duplication in registration records - eg: c/n 918 is listed both as the record-breaking Laté 28-8 airframe and as Aeroposta Argentina's F-AJPD which crashed in Rio Plate estuary.

At this stage, the straightforward listing of Latécoère designations comes unstuck. The Laté 29 was a torpedo-bomber floatplane derived from the Laté 28 high-winged monoplane transport. Laté 29 derivative designations might be shown as eg: Laté 29-6 or Laté 296.

The Laté 298 follows the Laté 29 so it would be logical that the Laté 298 was the eight variant of the Laté 29. Indeed, this type is sometimes to be seen listed in modern sources as the 'Laté 29-8'.

This is inaccurate. The Laté 298 was a completely new, low-winged floatplane torpedo-bomber. Indeed, the Laté 298 was intended to be a replacement to the earlier Laté 29 series. Nevertheless. I will list the Laté 298 and landplane Laté 299 as if they numerically followed in the Laté 29-7 sequence.

From there, the numerical sequence will be continued but note dates to reveal that these projects and designs were often not chronologically sequential.

Till today I did not know that the Laté 299A/299A-01 flew. I had 4 articles and one book where it was wrote that it was destroyed on the 30/04/1944, before it's main flight...

But in the last special issue of the french magazine Avions, Philippe Ricco writes that this plane flew three times : 25/04/1944, 27/04/1944 (35') and 28/04/1944 (40'). Nothing more is wrote about these flights.

I hope, in the future, a new article about the last days of this plane :)

The special issue of the magazine (French planes with german markings during WW2, part 2) :

From Ailes 14/2/1959,

what was this Latecoere-910 ?.

As the text explains, the Latécoère 910 was a catapult and acceleration test rig. As with the Latécoère 768, the purpose of the 910 rig was to test jet engine performance at take-off speeds ... as well as deceleration trails for braking chutes and arrestor hooks. Braking was done with water which permitted hydrodynamical testing as well.

Other non-aircraft designations in related categories would be:

Latécoère 110 - Study for a postal missile (not proceeded with);
Latécoère 260 - Centrifuge capable of 15G (for humans), 40G (for equipment);
Latécoère 265 - Centrifuge for rocket nose cone testing (capable of 100G for 2.5 tonnes mass);
Latécoère 770 - Landing gear tests; and
Latécoère 777 - Vertical acceleration test rigs

From: Strategy and Management of Industrial Brands: Business to Business Products and Services by Philippe Malaval, Springer-Verlag New York Inc., NY, 2004, page 321

BTW, in the Latécoère missile series for the Marine, does anyone know of a non-'MS' Latécoère designations for the Masalca?

My dear Apophenia,

from TU magazine and the book,Latecoere Les Avions & Hydravions,please add those;

Laté-370,Laté-430 & Laté-590

MS 10 was the only Max Salmon missile built by Matra. It used a square-shaped ramjet.
The other ones in the series were built by Latecoere and used a 500 mm diameter ramjet.
MS 11 an MS 12 had delta wings; MS 11 with four wrap-around boosters and MS 12 with a single axial booster.
MS 14 was an improvement of MS 12 with a recoverable part.
MS 15 was a totally new vehicle with trapezoidal wings.

MS 20 and MS 21 were solid rocket powered mockups intended to test homing devices.

Two pictures :

- MS 15, with Popeye grain based booster

Thank you dear Cardonet,

and for my dear Apophenia, please add those designations,I know you already mentioned
some of them, but with more details.

Hi hesham,
I guess it's only a first installment of a long list... filling the many gaps I have (my highest nr.

I would mark this as the Late 600

Laté 900 : development of 631 with 8 tandem engines, MTOW 250t, project 1940
I would mark this image from 1936 L'Ala D'Italia as a Late 600 series. I guess the design was flawed as the 611 would use exactly the same engines in 4 abreast. I'm sure they knew how tandem push/pull engines would perform from the Do-X and S-55

L'Ala d'Italia slipped up there. Despite that 'Late' transatlantico title, this image illustrates the LeO H-47 prototype, F-APPR (first flown on 25 June 1936). So, the illustrator was depicting a Lioré et Olivier product, not one from Latécoère.

You can add this one in your list:
Latécoère 700 was a civil amphibious aircraft project based on Delanne design planned to be manufactured by Latécoère (1955).

I attach an extract of a letter from Marcel Moine, chief designer from Latécoère, about the price discussion with Maurice Delanne for using its design.
