Wow...

With eg the Boeing and Short designs ocean-hopping, how did the Germans end up with only the land-based Kondor and a couple of small-ish sea-planes ??

Is it possible to see inside these magazines online? Free of charge?

Germans had little reason to build such things. For what, direct travel to USA? To colonies? It was not economically feasible and there was little chance to sell their products to the French or British who had their own big flying boats.

Edit: I forgot to mention Dornier Do X, largest flying boat of the era. It was ultimately a financial failure, and not just because of the Great Depresion.

Found this in a newspaper archive (December 1926). It mentions a very large German seaplane liner for transoceanic travel. The wingspan would have been around 140 meters, plus a capacity of 150 passengers + 34 crew in luxurious accommodations. Luftfahrt History heft 8 also mentions this design, describing it as a 4-hull seaplane airliner. It was to be powered by 5 engines (2 in pusher, 3 in puller configuration). Neither source has any blueprints or drawings.
