Of all the future missiles in the above diagram the one that fascinates me the most is the B-STRIKE 2500 with maximum speed of Mach 15 range of 2500km that would be serious competition to potential advesaries I would think Forest Green.

^Is that glide warhead in the video separate to ArianeGroup's development then?

Do you mean that the fins be removed?
No its one full body but the sunlight and material do make it look like seperate things from some angles

Long range strike is challenge among EU nations because none them possess any bombers. Last UK bomber was Avro Vulcan.

If F111 had stayed upgraded service it's better range allowed Europe conduct missions without US support. But that. It range of good bomber.

No European Air Force operated the F-111. The only export was to Australia.

The main point is, lack EU possession of long range bomber.

If US provided water down version sub sonic B1 lancer to UK and maybe France, they could have had continental bombing capacity.

Midair refueling solves that. It doesn't give you the same strike capacity as a bomber, but you can reach the same range and deliver payload on target.

Forward deploying also exists.

Forward basing. And no one is going to be flying "upgraded F-111´s" or "sub sonic B1" over enemy territory when the (almost certain) possible adversary fields AWACS, Mig-31BM/SU-35´s and throws Vympel´s R-37M´s to every "blip" that appears near the front line.

We could discuss if France/Germany/UK/Italy/etc need something like a) survivable long range asset in a high threat scenario (a European B-21) or b) a cargo/ASW/whatever long range aircraft equipped with long range precision munitions (like the A-400M palletized launch system that Airbus is proposing). What Europe does not need are some very old, very tired airframes with an RCS the size of a barn.

F-111 was designed in response to a 1960 operational requirement, the threat has evolved somewhat since that time. No one would operate an F-111, however much upgraded, into a modern threat environment.

For the F-111's interdiction role Panavia developed the Tornado and France the Mirage 2000N/D. Both are a generation newer than the F-111. While the F-111 had a longer range it wasn't massively greater than that of the Mirage or Tornado, which both had all the range needed for their interdiction missions.

I'd question why we're discussing a long range European strike capable aircraft in a thread about a long-range ballistic/cruise missile requirement, it's a bit like discussing B-21 in the MASS thread, or PAK-DA in a Kalibr thread, but in any event GCAS has probably got the long range piloted strike role covered given reported range and bay size.

ETA: the RAF seems to be managing 1,650ml strike missions* with Typhoon without any major issues.

* Akrotiri to Yemen.

I know we're off topic....but we're not flying strikes on Yemen....

Op Shader sorties into Syria and Iraq have reportedly been 3,000nm+ though
