Airbus A320 genesis

Hi,

Aerospatiale A.200 :short/medium range twin-turbofan transport/airliner
project of 1975,powered by two CFM56 Snecm engines.

Why does this project look almost identicle to the similiar, equally unbuillt, CFM-56 engined Dassault/McDonnell Douglas Mercure 200?

No, no, no ! It looks almost identical to the later Airbus A320 .... ;D

Sadly, the Mercure 200 would have occupied the exact same market segment as the A320, only it was 5 years too early. It seems like such a waste that all of the investment in the Mercure couldn't have been salvaged?

It seems amazing in retrospect that the CFM-56 sat on the shelf for so long, while the JT8D had a virtual monopoly on the bottom end of the airliner market.

This design of the french engineer I.Labat looks remarkably different.
It's from 1958 and was credited with ultra-short take-off.

Dear Boys and Girls, here is an article describing the all-new (and non-derivative) Aérospatiale A200A & A200B "projects" for (then) new technology short-medium range jet airliners. The Aérospatiale A200s were not Airbus Industrie designs; they remained "projects" but over the next several years would contribute to and develop into (and through many permutations) the Airbus A320 family of jet airliners......

The article comes from the August 1977 issue of Air International......

What happen to my memory;


the Aerospatiale/Alenia/British Aerospace AIA.220 was a 100-seat jetliner
for collaboration with China and Singapore,and later incorporated into
Airbus as AE316 and AE317,before dropped and replaced by the A318
aircraft.

the Aerospatiale A200 was called at first AS.200,and here is its variants;


AS.200-20 powered by two engines
AS.200-30 powered by three engines
AS.200-40 powered by four engines
AS.200-23M & AS.200-24M with Snecma CFM56 engines


That's new for me.

Interestingly one response by Boeing was to propose a down-rated 757 option with CFM56s, which would scarifice hot-and-high performance for efficiency. Basically an A321

Study from 1977 and named JET Drg No. 001 and published in the March 1987 Hatfield Fututre Projects Newsletter. Drawn by CFD Clarke this is featured in an article on the evolution of the Airbus A320 and makes use of 'Derived Components'... of note is the 146 style nose...
