I normally would hate to disagree with you, but this is technically liquid inside of liquid, in turn inside of solid! Not disagreeing that whatever the configuration, it may well be a bad idea!

Launch was 3x shuttle SRBs, ground lit alongside 6x Delta II cores. SRBs staged first, followed by the Delta II cores, with a 7th, presumably air start or deeply throttled, Delta II acting as the 2nd stage.

And people accused me of thinking rockets were LEGOs.

This is an example of folks falling all over themselves to all but support a proper HLLV.

There was a SD-HLLV called MAGNUM...no dice.

It seems like whiNASA wanted an HLLV, DoD didn't, and vice versa.

Were there other Barbarian concepts?

Thanks, it might be worth splitting the MDD 'Barbarian' off into it's own thread, hopefully the board members can run down a bit more information than Mike Wade did for this article (Linked below) which is the sole basis for the Wikipedia article. Wikipedia's poaching of Wade's work is one of the reasons the Encyclopedia Astronautica site was abandoned by it's creator.

I assumed the blue things were solids, not Delta II cores. I stand corrected.

Still seems like the SRBs would have an intense vibration environment.
 
For what it's worth, Mike Wade's source for both the McDD 'Barbarian' and the Titan 'Barbarian' was a single article entitled "SDI Considers Cluster Booster to Launch Zenith Star Spacecraft" published in a November 1987 issue of 'Aviation Week & Space Technology'. Only the index for July - December 1987 is available at the internet archive. Full issues of the magazine end at 1963.
