The Des Moines aren't that much newer, and neither are their propulsion plants. Still the same sort of 600 psi machinery as wartime ships, not the 1200 psi machinery of the Mitschers onwards, nor the new pressure-fired boilers used on the Knox class and intended for the John F. Kennedy, so there aren't really any grounds for that much improvement in propulsion.

The 1200 psi plants proved problematic for the US Navy. They were unreliable and somewhat dangerous to operate. For example, you often took your broomstick with you, waving it up and down, to warn you of a steam leak when walking around the machinery spaces...

600 psi will cut you in half as well but the 1200s I’ve heard were difficult.

With the 600's you can see a steam leak. With the 1200's it was still super-heated dry steam so you couldn't see one.

Pardon me, this thread popped up on the sidebar of the 600-ship reactivation discussions.

Gimme a break. Did they intended to shoot submarines using cruise missiles ? alternately, don't tell me they would drop torpedoes or mines or buoys from a BGM-109 ?

There were a bunch of different options being discussed. Up to and including a two-weapon attack where the first missile was packed full of Sonobuoys and the second missile had ~4 more sonobuoys to lock down the target sub's position before dropping a lightweight torpedo on it.

The "payloads" slide even has 3 nuke depth charges as an option! Note that the Pk lines are talking about 2nd versus 3rd generation targets.
