When I saw your posting it remind me that I had a copy another study that investigated the water landing characteristics of reentry vehicles.

Not sure you are aware but there was another study done in 1972 by Stubbs entitled Water landing characteristics of a model of a winged reentry vehicles.

Which makes me wonder whether there was any studies done on water landing characteristics of the space shuttle orbiter

An investigation has been made to determine the water-landing characteristics of a winged reentry configuration. The all-wing configuration had a delta wing with a leading-edge sweep of 63º, extendable outboard wing panels, small retractable hydro-skis, and a tail skid.

...In Graham's defense, let's not forget that the search engines of at least 90% of the Bulletin Board Forum software packages are far more miss than hit when it comes to doing a search for a specific topic or subject. Most of them won't even let you sort by date or relevance, just displaying whatever it happens to come across that it -thinks- fits your search request.

And yes, as I've pointed out in the past, this caveat applies to the search engine that the SP Forum uses :'(

Idle curiosity...what was the supposed advantage of a water-landing system rather than landing on the ground with wheel or skid landing gear? Apollo splashdown I understand, but not this one.

I guess the same selling point as seaplanes - a much wider area of real estate to put your craft down in.

True, but like seaplanes, there is a substantial weight penalty to pay for the structural strength required to take water landings. I would think that a space craft would have even less ability to carry the excess weight.
