Vultee XP1015 and other twin engined Vultee fighter projects

Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

Again an excellent find hesham! Congratulations.

While waiting for more opinions from other members, I think that Vultee design is the Model XP-1015 or a very close relative.

XP-1015 was Vultee's entry to USAAC Circular Proposal X-608 for high altitude interceptor pursuit aircraft. The winner was Lockheed Model 22 which entered mass production as P-38 Lightning.

A Vultee XP-1015 drawing can be found on Warren M. Bodie "The Loockheed P-38 Lightning". Widewing Publications. Pg 19.

Antonio

Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

Hi friends! I found the 3-view of an unknown Vultee fighter in an old italian newspaper. I don't know if it is a real project: in the article the're no more infos about that project, they just indicate the aircraft like "Vauguard".

You forgot once again to mention the source Hesham.

in this case : Vultee "P-38" by Dusty Carter in AAHS Journal Spring 1988.

Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

Ok my dear Lark,but the source is;

the book; The Lockheed P-38 Lightning by Warren M. Bodie.

Ah , interesting ! Then the same drawing must have been used...

Yes my dear lark, and I think exactly it.

And I repeat the drawing but seperately,to help in Modelling form.

Well, we found in soviet documents description and general views. But... as XP-35.

Nice find Taranov.

Yes that make sense because the XP1015 was Competitor for USAAF ‘Twin-engine, High Altitude Interceptor’
in end it winner was Lockheed Model 22 / XP-38 better know as P-38 Lightning

Re: Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

Hi!
Where is the radiator? ;D
Did XP1015 has a turbocharger?
Bottom drawing is XP-35?
Engine nacelle shape is little different from XP1015.

Re: Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

Taranov ,

The Vultee project on the drawing is indeed the Vultee XP-35. (Vultee desingnation not to confuse with the US AAC system)
It was a smaller version of the their XP 1015...

What are the origings of your drawing..?

This is a most interesting discovery. The drawing looks as though it might have come directly from Vultee. Were the Soviets looking at purchasing manufacturing rights, or buying planes from Vultee?

Re: Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

IIRC, the USSR did buy some V-11s in this general time period, so there was apparently contact and it is possible other aircraft were offered by Vultee.

According to Dusty Carter's article in the Spring 1988 AAHS Journal, he worked on the proposal as a junior draftsman. He states it had twin turbos, four .50 caliber and one 20mm gun mounted in the nose, and radiators buried in the wings (note openings in the outboard leading edges).

Thanks a lot. It's logical that XP1015 had twin turbo because XP1015 was a competitor of P-38. But I can't find where turbo charger was.
Turbocharger was located at the fuselage same as XP-71?
Radiator position was a big problem for every radical designer who designed the aircraft with liquid cooling engine.

See the detail of the nacelle. I assume the round thing towards the rear is a GE turbocharger.

Re: Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

Oh I see. Thanks a lot again.
Perhaps air intake for turbo charger, air intake for intercooler and air intake for oil cooler were also located at the wing leading edge.
Vultee XP-54 wing leading edge airintakes were as follows.
From inboard to outboard
①Air intake for turbocharger
②Air intake for intercooler
③Air intake for radiator
④Air intake for radiator
⑤Air intake for oil cooler

Thanks for sharing the XP-54 cutaway--I had not seen it before. Do you know the source of the image?

Re: Vultee XP1015 twin engined fighter

A bit more information...

XP-1015 Vultee's proposal for X-608 powered by two Allison V-1710-C7 engines

XP-35 aimed for the foreign market powered by two Hispano-Suiza 12Y-21 engines.
XP-35 also noted as configuration XP-236 on a drawing dated August 1937-after the end
of X-608 competition.

The Soviet connection makes even more sense now. The Hispano-Suiza 12Y was being produced and developed in Russia by 1938.

Hi!
Almost same scale.
XP1015 is very slim. Cockpit is narrow for American pilot? But cockpit breadth kept P-51 size.;D
I imagine that XP1015 had smaller room for fuel compared with p-38. XP1015 large main landing gears were retracted to the inboard wing and outboard wing was filled with intercooler, radiator and oil cooler. Main landing gears of P-38 were retracted to the engine nacelle.
Flight said that XP1015 torsional strength of the rear fuselage is to be questioned.
Too slim? ;D
Of course P-38 connected twin rear fuselage torsional stregth is enough. C.L.Johnson's design is excellent.

I've superimposed the plan views of the Vultee XP1015 and the P-38E to scale. Overall dimensions are similar, but the Lockheed has notably less wing area (P-38E drawing from: P-38 Lightning In Action, Larry Davis).

Thanks a lot. Excellent drawing. I felt so,too. Perhaps P-38 wing loading was larger than XP1015 wing loading.
I really want to konw XP1015 empty weight or MTOW.
