I'm working on a history of the USAF Century Series of Fighters: F-100 to F-106. Here's an appendix showing contract dates and numbers related to these aircraft. I realize some others were built but they went to foreign air forces and they are not included within this list. Any additions/corrections will be most appreciated. -SP

I forgot to mention that an appendix will cover the non-production Century Series aircraft: XF-103, F-107A, F-108A, XF-109, and F-110A. -SP

That was one of my concerns... ;)

But F-110A... non-production? What about the F-4C? ;D

You're right about the F-4C going into production and it will be touched upon but if I do a chapter on the the F-4C - formerly F-110, it'll fall out of the realm of the Century numbered types. -SP

I remember, years ago, seeing mention of a ground attack F-102 variant after it had "passed its prime". The designation given was "F-102X" but that could've been disinformation. Do you have anything about such a study?

If it's the same F-102X, it is mentioned in the chart attached. It was redesignated as F-102C before being cancelled.

Here's a rare photo of F-101A numbers one (background) and two. -SP

Sounds like a great book; your other books that I have are excellent.

How are you going to handle the F-111; it is certainly in the Century Series and the designation did not change like the F-110.

Hi Wes - Thanks for your kind words and of course the F-111 and FB-111 are included. -SP

Steve,

I have read and totally enjoyed these books by you: X Fighters, Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, XB-70, Edwards AFB Flight Test Center, SR-71, Lockheed Skunk Works, and X Planes at Edwards. I am sure this new book will be equal or surpass the others.

When will it be out? Do you consider the F-117 as part of the Century Series, since it came out of the non-standard designation area?

Wes W.

Thanks so much, Wes.
In no way is the F-117 part of the Century Series. In my eyes (and many other eyes) the Century Series include the F-100 through F-106 only. In my forthcoming book, however, I've included the F-107 since it was in direct competition with the F-105; it didn't go into production however. The F-103 is part of the Century Series too but as you know it didn't go into production either.
It should be published by Father's Day.
Happy Holidays!
-SP

Your comment about the Century Series ending at F-106 is interesting. Setting aside the F-110/F-4 issue, I would think that the F-111 is a legitimate member of the Century Series "club": The designation follows the F-110, over 500 were built and it was in service for about 30 years.

Wes W.

Thanks for your continued interest, Wes. In my book the F-110/F-4 and F/FB-111 will be covered in Chapter 6: Supersonic Wonders and Doublesonic Sensations. -SP

That would be very surprising I think, because then you'd have to cover ALL the non-official, non-standard YF-11* designations: the MiGs, Sukhois, secret prototypes, etc. and that would reach well beyond the scope of the book's subject, don't you think? Especially since the F-117A never was a fighter nor meant to be one (they kept the designation from the YF-117A prototypes and dropped the "Y" because it was convenient; don't forget either that the YF-117D was Tacit Blue, not sequential and not a fighter either...

F-111 has never been considered part of the Century series AFAIK. F-100 - XF-108 (or XF-109 if one wants to reach).

One plane that belongs there is the YF-12 interceptor, imho. At least it's got to be borderline.

The "Century" fighter designations were all allocated during the 1950s, except for the F-111.

The F- designations of the tri-service system, allocated in 1962, were for all existing fighters of the Air Force and Navy.
Only two previously undesignated types were made part of that sequence, the F-5 and F-12.

This being said, I think that if one type could be made an honorary member of the Century club, it should be the F-5.
It co-existed with the Century series for nearly 8 years, from 1955 to 1962, without any other designation than "N-156F".
As evidence of this I refer you to the excellent book United States Army & Air Force Fighters 1916-1961 published by Harleyford in 1961 (see attachment).

Although ordered in 1960, however, he F-12 didn't fly until 1963 so it can hardly be made part of the Century series.

I know this has been covered before, but if the Tri-Service scheme had not been forced upon the services (apparently because McNamara got hopelessly confused over the F4H-1 and the F-110A being the same aircraft), any idea on what the Freedom Fighter would have been called had the "old" scheme continued, or if the Freedom Fighter had received a designation in the late 50's early 60's before Sep 62?
Perhaps it would have been the F-112.

Wes W.

Chronologically the YF-5A flew before the F-111A (1963 vs. 1964) and the N-156F (YF-5A prototype) flew some four years earlier. My story - sticking to it! -SP
