US Navy OS-117 Outline Specification (S-2 Tracker rivals)

Beautiful! :) Thanks for sharing! ;)

Any idea what NA- number that could be, anyone?

It was never assigned an NA- number, but it did get a D- number: it's the NAA D140 (per aim9xray's research into Robert Bradley's research at SDAM in San Diego). The project is also known by its NAA Engineering Sales Order: ESO 4638 for the U.S. Navy's BuAer OS-117 ASW Specification.

My earlier post in this topic (reply #46, dated December 14, 2009) has been updated accordingly.

Vought V-368 vs V-368A: Short version

Grumman appears to have come in first in the OS-117 evaluation and Vought, a close second. BuAer gave Vought the opportunity to update its V-368 proposal to be more competitive. The V-368A had a higher aspect ratio (greater wingspan) and a modified roll control system (spoilers and feeler ailerons similar to the S2F's) than the V-368. The wing-folding arrangement was therefore changed to a bi-fold one similar to the Gannett's. (Note the different and conventional fold in Mark's post of the V-368 proposal brochure vs the Gannett-type in the XWU-1 mockup and the three-view above.)

Yes, very readable. Would I be correct in interpreting the order of the manufacturers (left to right) as a ranking (highest score to lowest score)?

I don't know. There was no scoring or ranking that I saw. I think this was the only summary sheet in the files. It does appear, as stated above, that Vought was allowed to sweeten its proposal. If I remember correctly, the Curtiss proposal, which is second from the left, appeared to be above average in thoroughness and thoughtfulness so it might very well be in rank order. Grumman's single-engine proposal is also on the left

An excellent report by Tony Chong covering the Northrop N60 can be found here.

Splendid! What always makes me cringe about finding such treasures on eBay is that unless they land in a museum's collection, there is no guarantee they will endure. No-one can be sure that the owner's kids will not make a huge bonfire of all their dad's stuff after he passes, and that's why I deeply regret that the aircraft companies do not strive to not only keep copies of all these documents and to make them readily available to researchers and historians, as they collectively make up a valuable portion of the industrial and engineering heritage of a country.
Sorry for being slightly off-topic but I'm still in shock after reading about the demise of the Republic archives last week and find it hard to get over it.

Here are some of the envisioned weapons loads for the XS2U-1
Wing mounded 5" HVAR and HPAG Rockets.
In the weapons bay the outlines of a MK 24 Mine, MK 34-1 and MK 41-1 Torpedoes are shown.

Got the SAC sheet and Summary Report on the Martin 255 in the mail today from a Furniture place in Colorado.

Will scan both in and post them in the future; but in the meantime, here's something to whet your appetites.

Thanks Ryan, I'll be looking forward to the full report, also, thanks for the teasers as well. :)

I couldn't help noticing that the Martin 255 greatly resembles the much later Beechcraft King Air 200/Huron/1900 series...

Come to think of it, there is also quite a bit of the Lockheed XV-4A Hummingbird's fuselage in it...

Great minds I guess! My first thought was Beech Queen Air with a T-Tail.

Beautiful illustration of the model 255.
Is there any hope for more information..?
Thanks.

New book. Just got it myself. Lots of stuff in there about the competition that led to the Tracker. Alternate variants, etc.

WOW, you made my weekend... :-* :-* :-*
The designs by Chase, Central and Goodyear are new for me...MANY thanks.

Excellent work my dear Blackstar,

and the Central proposal came from Central Aircraft Corporation, which took over
Aeromarine Co. Plant in 1941;

Go buy the book. Give the authors a little sugar...

Also, this is labeled "Part 1," so if you want to see a Part 2, you gotta buy it.

Wow, I wasn't necessarily interested in buying a book on the S-2, but what I see is not a run-of-the-mill product. Tommy REALLY put good stuff in there. I changed my mind!
