US Memorial Day

Until reading some of the postings here last year, I didn’t realize that many folks don’t understand what Memorial Day in the US is really about. There are other holidays meant to honor the US Armed Forces (Armed Forces Day) and also veterans (Veteran’s Day). Memorial Day (Formerly Decoration Day) dates from shortly after the US Civil War and is meant to commemorate those who died in US service and to recall what they sacrificed for.

Years ago, the American government actually encouraged universal voting and ran a TV ad campaign to help that effort:

“When you turned 21 (these days it's 18), you got a present you didn’t ask for;
A lot of people died, to give it to you.”
