The Loligo, a small submarine intended for science, taken over by the military, not used for either purpose

Another photo of the "Loligo", which was built by the Danubius dockyard in Fiume, and completed on the
Whitehead dockyard. Interesting concept, and actually only intended fro scientific and research use, ordered
by Dr. Paul Schottländer. It had a displacement of 44.1/50 ts and was powered by an electric engine of 50 hp
only. According to Wilhelm Donko "Österreichisch-Ungarische Unterseeboote" the acquisition of this sub by the
navy and its modification into a coast defence submarine was seriously contemplated, but in the end rejected, because the first submarines of the German UB I-type German should be available soon and the Loligo would
have needed special infrastructure, like a shore-based charger base, not needed by other types. So its deployment
was regarded as not really worthwhile to the Army Supreme Command. (photo from the above mentioned book)
