For folks struggling with the geography of the Russian invasion, I think the Institute for the Study of War has a very good map. They define control in the conventional maneuver warfare sense -- the Russians can keep Ukrainian ground forces from moving through the territory but not necessarily prevent all opposition there.

It sounds as if the Russians are offering a 2015 status quo antebellum in return for a couple of promises that probably don’t have to be kept. No demilitarization of Ukraine, apparently. If anything, this is quite a good deal. Ukraine gets rebuilt at the expense of American and EU taxpayers and a short term lie or pious fiction about not joining the EU or NATO is all it costs. As if a clause in the Ukrainian constitution counts for much.

Obtaining a 2014 status quo antebellum doesn’t seem to be attainable for Ukraine. I don’t see any maneuvering warfare, just static defense, despite a supposedly intact Air Force with a majority of its airframes operational and an Army with an intact fleet of tank and armored vehicles, with remarkable few official losses.

They apparently had one other requirement -- Zekensky gets to stay as President in name only, but the Russians appoint a PM who actually has control. Which means this is a non-starter.

3rd round of Russia-Ukraine cease-fire talks end

The third round of cease-fire talks between Ukraine and Russia took place in Belarus Monday and produced incremental steps forward, according to the lead Ukrainian negotiator.

Following the meeting, the third in eight days, lead Ukrainian negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted, "There are small positive movements forward in improving the logistics of humanitarian corridors... Intensive consultations have continued on the basic political block of the regulations, along with a ceasefire and security guarantees."

Ukrainian authorities have claimed efforts to evacuate its citizens out of the country have been disrupted by Russian forces shelling the humanitarian corridors Moscow agreed to in a cease-fire.

White House Daily Briefing

This is scary. It looks like the retaking of Chernihv puts significant Ukrainian forces at risk of envelopment.
That's first. Then the real crux is probably controlling Kherson enables moving up and down the river to connect them to the Kiev salient.
That's why this was a big deal and underreported, imo.

Now with Mykolaiv they'll control the mouth of the Bug. Would leave forces in the east enveloped and unsupplied, while Ukraine is left holding the mountainous areas in the West with unfavourable terrain for a mobility war. I doubt there's any reason for Russia to go much west of the Dnieper because they can achieve their political goals without it at much less risk (unless someone drags Transnistria into it.

It doesn't include encirclements though which are significant as they indicate trapped Ukrainian forces that need to either break out or be relieved by allies from outside.

As some here already know, I´m in Europe. Inflation here has been similar (slightly less) then in the US over the past year, and since the start of the war inflation is now higher then in the US. The price of gas today (to heat houses & buildings, and not to be confused with the liquid people in the US put in the tanks of their cars) is 20 times higher then a year ago

Ouch. I'm having enough trouble keeping fuel in my jalopy, 20x increase in heating costs is brutal. And the flow on effects for the economy!

Hackers have claimed to inject Ukrainian war footage into various Russian state media. Is there anyone here that confirm?

In every war and especially hybrid war, there is propaganda and disinformation but this...

To paraphrase 1984's O'Brien, if you want a vision of the future, imagine a clown shoe stamping on a human face forever.

Nearly two weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the flow of false or misleading information about the war hasn't let up and now there are some outlandish theories being shared online.

Some have begun to circulate claims the war is a hoax
