Here's a Seamew caught in a brief moment of glory. No idea what shade of grey the monochrome Seamew is, unless it is unpainted. The prototype was unpainted (a colour photo of it in BSP: Bombers) and it looks pretty monochromatic so perhaps that could explain this aircraft with the photo taken on a cloudy day.

Thanks for the pic but the question was what colour was Seamew XE175 painted in? Its clearly not in the normal colour scheme (see pic at start of topic).

Seems XE 175 was one the few MR.2s built of the Seamew.

Some quick googling around led to this:

Yes I know about that film Uncle Jack, and that it was supposed to contain a film of the crash that killed Wally Runciman. I was there as an air cadet selling programmes on the day and we went over to the other side of the airfield (to our HQ) which was beside the Shorts Test Pilot shed. We watched XE 175 being prepared and Wally climbing into the cockpit. He began with two loops, then flew along the flight path with the bomb bay open and then he went into two rolls. In the middle of the second one, while inverted, the plane dropped its nose and flew straight into the ground. It was like an inverted stall. I've tried to get a copy of the AAIB report on the accident but so far with no luck.

Maybe the film can be of use into IDing XE 175's colour.

At a glance I would suggest Dark Sea Grey, though.

Regards.

According to the Magna Models instructions that is in the RAF Coastal Command colour of Dark Sea Grey, the FAA were Extra Dark Sea Grey over Sky

I was reading an article in an Air-Britain quarterly (Militaria) about another Navy prototype of the same time period, and it was painted an overall grey too, IIRC, it mentioned the colour you have suggested
