was looking through an early Apollo document (It still refers to the Centaur as the S-V stage) which discussed high-speed reentry testing and found several mentions of an S-IVc stage.

For some time I'd known of a modified S-IVb stage designed for long term orbital storage called the S-IVc, but this does not seem to be the same thing.

The only clue is that the thrust of the S-IVc is twice that of the S-IVb, so I'm assuming that what was being described was an S-IVb with two J-2 engines.

I'd love to know more.

that's the SI-abc, what start with Saturn-I II and C-series study

back they try a modular system of Upperstage for Saturn rocket
like
Saturn C-1 with First stage S-I second stage S-IV and third stage a small stage S-V what became Centaur
Saturn C-2 with First stage S-I second stage S-II and third stage S-IV
(the S-II got 2 J-2 Engines)

the S-IV 50 tons with six RL-10 evolved to S-IVB 118 tons with one J-2 engine for Saturn-IB and Saturn V
Because it was manufactured by same company Douglas, later McD

later in 1967 during Saturn-V Improvement study the term S-IVC comes up.
most a stretched 204 tons stage with one or two J-2S or one HG-3 engine

also was the term used in Manned Mars and Venus flyby study's
Here die S-IVC is used for EOR with Apollo/Habitat
it got J-2S engine, RCS with more fuel and Docking-system
