Designations of Romanian Designs by Inginerul Iosif Silimon

IS (Iosif Silimon) Series Designations

While employed as an IAR Brasov engineer in 1949, Iosif Silimon completed his first glider built at and for the Aeroclubul Sânpetru (Sânpetru was a small village neighboring Brasov). The designation may have been IS-1-2 but was more likely IS-2.

Production and development of Iosif Silimon's designs were then undertaken by the successors to IAR-Brasov, URMV-3 (Uzinele de Reparatii Material Volant-3, 1950-1959) and ICA Brasov (Intreprinderea de Constructii Aeronautice).

These gliders and aircraft all retained the IS prefix until very lately when IAR designations (and re-designations) began to appear.

IS-6 and IS-10 were also a gliders.

Cheers Hesham! Do you have dates for those designs by any chance? Or details for any other IS designs?

Nothing info about I.S.6.
I.S. 10 was built in 1960 and the I.S.26 1969. Do you need more info...?

Sorry my dear Apophenia,

no data I have for IS-6,and I don't know which year it was built.

I.S.29D vs I.S.29D2. Minor change to aerofoil section to improve low speed manners. Both flapped, incl negative setting. Both retractable long travel U/C. D2 has removable turtle deck offering better access for rigging/derigging. D model had all flying tail with anti-balance trim tab. D2 had conventional horizontal stab and elevator. Personal reference VH-GPO (D2 serial #63) written off Darling Downs, Queensland Australia during the early 2000's in a fatal stall spin accident and VH-GWC (D model serial #50) retired due to life expiry and donated to Queensland Air Museum, Caloundra Queensland. Of interest the I.S.29D/D2 was stressed for unlimited aerobatics, however certification was never sought. I have it on good authority that the factory test pilot was observed performing outside square loops in one back in the day. Richard Friday
